Because like it or not, the iPad does it better. Once Apple throws in multi tasking and it turns out to be as good as Android, the iPad suddenly has potential. The battery life is quite good, the hardware is bang on (I don't like Apple, but they do make great hardware) and the software is also very well written.
The iPad integrates with dashboards better? What?

Once Apple allows the pairing of keyboards via Bluetooth (all in 4.0, though not having it at launch is quite a poor move), then you will have an alternate means of input. !
You can already pair bluetooth keyboards with it.

Of course, those are just some of the 100 new features in iPhone 4.0. As a writer, I'm psyched about Bluetooth keyboard support. The iPhone camera is getting a little love, too, with 5x zoom and tap-to-focus video. There's nothing in Jobs' slides about those direct wireless printing rumors we covered this morning, though.

Normally I wouldn't question you on anything you say about Apple products, Bertster, but...

All the ones I've used have paired with bluetooth keyboards.

I had to do a training lab they called "Meet the iPad", where I was using a bluetooth keyboard with an iPad.

Apple Wireless Keyboard

The incredibly thin Apple Wireless Keyboard uses Bluetooth technology, which makes it compatible with iPad. And you’re free to type wherever you like — with the keyboard in front of your iPad or even on your lap.
The iPhone doesn't support bluetooth keyboards and will with iPhone OS 4.0. That could be what is confusing you.

Ahhh, thank you very much for clearing that up, Bertster. Like I said, I never want to contradict you when it comes to Apple products... You work for Apple directly, don't you? I recall you mentioning it before, but I honestly do not remember.

I was referring to this post with my longer one, Mikkel. Sorry for the confusion. I forgot to quote your post in mine.

This thread is about putting an iPad in a car. There were better products released five years ago that were used to do precisely the same thing, five years ago.

If you're going on about use of the device, it seems somewhat dubious to first assert, without reasoning, that the iPad is better than alternatives, and then suggest that it lacks basic functionality.

Name one device that has a full Internet browser, 3G modem, media player (video and audio) and GPS navigation that has been built and sold before the iPad. Granted, the 3G model hasn't come out yet, so the current model doesn't have GPS or, obviously, a 3G modem, but that's rather irrelevant.

It's all very good I suppose, but who's going to be reading large volumes of text and using a bluetooth keyboard WHILST DRIVING?!

All of the hardware of the currently released iPad has been available with superior components in more or less any Windows based tablet released in the past good few years. They also all have more of everything. 3G? Easy to fit, and existed in tablets prior to the iPad. GPS? No idea, not really a typical tablet PC feature, and certainly available to anyone who might want it. I don't think any sensible person would praise the iPad for its hardware components.

yes but you CAN, you cannot in an the iPhone OS. Despite the philosophical purity argument you make, without the ability to run flash, its not fully functional. My phone runs flash

Utterly pointless with that model. He really should have waited for the 3G model, because then you would have also had free navigation (sort of). As it is with that model, you have no SIM card and thus no Internet connection. The only way to get an Internet connection is to jailbreak it and tether it (unless you're using a European model, because then tethering would most likely be enabled and not blocked; did AT&T ever remove the tethering block on the iPhone, btw?) or set up one of those in-car modems that broadcasts a 3G modem signal through the car over wifi.

I think the 3G iPad also has different dimensions, so if the guy wanted to swap it out, he would likely have to break out the dremel again or buy a new center console to modify again.
also, Dension make an in car WiFi system.

Already posted that... the modem would actually be more cost effective, but ultimately potentially slower (Tmobile and AT&T both have rather poor 3G networks and I'm not aware of a CDMA equivalent, as of right now I only know of Huawei's Mi-Fi modem; Ford is apparently going to be doing it this year, too, but I have no idea what carrier you'll partner up with) as the modem from Huawei is rated at 7.2Mbps while there are newer USB modems out there rated at 21Mbps (also from Huawei). (this article is less than a month old: http://www.broadbandsuppliers.co.uk/new … t1260.html)

So if you shelled out the $120 extra it will cost to get a 3G modem in your iPad (which costs about the same as the subsidized modem from 3 in the UK), the iPad modem will probably be faster than whatever extra modem you would have to buy for your car and then divide the connection across the wifi network within the car. So if you're on a road trip with more than one person wanting a connection, your speed will suffer and 3G modems don't have the best ping. I'd personally rather have the built-in 3G modem for speed's sake and then couple that with the 4.0 OS's new (if you want to call it that) multitasking, you could probably set up navigation with Internet browsing/media so that the passenger(s) can play with the iPad and the nav system will interrupt and tell you your turn is coming up.
Are you just confrontational or what? I was just saying something like a mifi. I didn't see that posted anywhere previously. If I'm wrong show me.

It seems the point of this project is to say "Look what we already did". Not to be the best way to do it for all time. Obviously they are working with what they have. Are you familiar with the term Jury rigging?
