As always when it comes to these lame "best player in the world arguments" there is never a definitive answer because it's impossible to compare different leagues and teams.
Messi is the best to watch yes, and is without doubt joint best in the world.
But remember this, Messi is surrounded by class players with unbelievable skill and the ability to intimidate any team. Rooney on the other hand has pretty much carried the entire manchester utd team this season, he has been a leader ad well as their best player by a million miles, united's midfield and other forwards isn't even in the same league as barcelonas....you can not say Messi is "better" than him, well not IMO anyway.
Perhaps if you moved both of them into the italian/german league into the same team, then and only then could you compare.
Hopefully united will meet them in the final, another good way to compare would be to see who influences the outcome of that match.
Wow. That's pretty much bollocks. Even commentators were saying that Rooney and Messi were close.... like 2 weeks ago. Now everyone accepts Messi is the greatest and he is miles ahead of any player.
I'm sorry, but Rooney is in no way on par with Messi in any way. He's fantastic, and definitely one of the worlds best, but not anywhere close to Messi. As shown by his performance last night.
Messi can rape any team he wants, without needing the support of his team. Rooney, on the other hand, cannot. Rooney requires a solid midfield to give him the opportunities he has at goal, whereas Messi can produce out of nothing. Sure, Messi has a great team surrounding him, but as shown from last night, his goals were pretty much crafted out of nothing. Rooney cannot do that, he needs players like Giggs, Park and Valencia to feed him for him to produce.
