To be honest, that's bullshit. We don't have the resources nor the money to follow through with such a plan. I really don't see how this is going to be achieved. Most houses in the UK still use cable and Brown is saying that we're going to get speeds of 50mbps? Bollocks to that. Our whole internet system is flawed, with the new law getting passed on the 1st of April regarding illegal sites and the fact that providers right now (Easynet) are actively blocking sites like rapidshare without anybodys permission. We're too far behind to catch up by 2012. Same goes for shit like the railway.

On a side note note, he also mentions a new government portal that's going to have everything on it and connected to everything... I'd like to see that happen without major fuck ups... Oh wait.

Election time isn't going to stop the Digital Economy Bill... Which is going to fuck over the entire internet in the UK.

The railway stuff right now is an entire mess, things are being funded that shouldn't be, the HS1 line is costing a ridiculous amount of money...

Look at it this way, the HS2 rail link in the UK from Birmingham to London is going to cost £30 billion... Guess how much it cost to connect the WHOLE of France? 10 million EUROS. Something went wrong in the calculations...and NR should never have been given the contract.

Yeah, I don't see how they're going to essentially fund fibre for the whole country. Sounds rather ambitious. I'm all for having plans like fibre internets for the whole country and high speed rail, it's about time we caught up with other European countries, but the costs seem massive, that must be a mistake that a line from London to Brum will be £30bn, surely.

As for all the piracy measures, I'm not too fazed about that. I don't think it will actually go ahead, in a world of wireless internet it's easy to hijack someone's connection and use it for evil doings so the government will have a hard time trying to make a case about pulling the plug for people in the way they want to

No mistake. Figures are the correct budget, which brings me back to the point that NR shouldn't be doing this project. Should have been outsourced from the beginning.

As for your 'not worried' approach to the anti piracy measures... I'm afraid you're very very wrong. It will most definitely be passed in the next bill. Easynet are already blocking access go RS ( and denying it ) and it's just going to get worse.

Spain did it a month ago, and they are heavier piraters than most other countries so you'd expect the law not to be passed due to the opposing forces...but it was, and now it's going to happen here.

That's why I'm signing up to a VPN service.

Really what is good speed? I'm even on wireless and when I click something it loads instantly. If it was double as instant Is till wouldn't notice. Videos buffer faster than they play as well so the only thing left is downloading. That doesn't even take that long anymore either, if you go do something else for an hour as well it passes even quicker.

We're a world of people that get what we want instantly and are still impatient.
