Zero hour nine a.m.
And I'm gonna be high as a kite by then
I miss the earth so much I miss my wife
It's lonely out in space
On such a timeless flight

Farewell Endeavor. It was also the last Night Launch of the Shuttle Program.

Sorry, it was just a handycam.

amazing... I miss the launch I saw when I was in Cocoa Beach last March

I swear every time I hear about a launch it's always the last night launch. If there is another scrubbed flight due to weather is there a chance of another night launch?

It's usually reattempted soon and the windows only vary by a few minutes day to day (about 15 mins). There are only four more launches left in total now. So unless they scrub a launch for weeks this was in fact the last night launch.

It'll be weird when the Shuttle is retired. Read about their attempts to prolong its service, but they couldn't because some of the companies supplying the parts had already shut down when their contracts were stopped.

So, what now? Are there going to be new ones?

Not that I'm aware of. Any idea on what's going to be used instead Kmar?

I remember some stuff about the X43, but I thought that was still a ways off.
Maybe they will use some Russian stuff in the mean time.

Mainly those Sojus-thingys, until they finished the development of Ares which will be similar to the old Saturn. No new shuttles in the next years tho.

How are US astronaughts going back up/down?

I heard that they'd be taken by the Russians until something was sorted out, or is it as soon as the Shuttles are finished the new thing is coming into service straight away?

Now let’s discuss the Constellation Program. The Program was planning to
use an approach similar to Apollo to return astronauts to the Moon some 50
years after that program’s triumphs. The Augustine Committee observed that this
path was not sustainable, and the President agrees. They found that
Constellation key milestones were slipping, and that the program would not get
us back to the moon in any reasonable time or within any affordable cost. Far
more funding was needed to make our current approach work. The Augustine
Committee estimated that the heavy lift rocket for getting to the moon would not
be available until 2028 or 2030, and even then they found “there are insufficient
funds to develop the lunar lander and lunar surface systems until well into the
2030s, if ever." So as much as we would not like it to be the case, and taking
nothing away from the hard work and dedication of our team, the truth is that we
were not on a path to get back to the moon's surface. And as we focused so
much of our effort and funding on just getting to the Moon, we were neglecting
investments in the key technologies that would be required to go beyond.

So this budget cancels the Constellation Program, including the Ares I and V
rockets and the Orion crew exploration vehicle. NASA intends to work with the
Congress to make this transition smooth and effective, working responsibly on
behalf of the Taxpayers.

I wanted to see them build something like Ares V, how is it that the biggest rocket ever built was in the 60's.

If only the stupidly rich Arabs were interested in space, maybe they could fund all sorts of crazy shit like they do on the ground. I mean come on, they have the moon all over their flags, their black box in Mecca has a meteorite inside it which they worship or some shit.

Cool vid. Tho if I was an American I would cry watching my tax dollars go up in flames like that. Probably a good idea to suspend it until the recession is over at least. Seams like a waste of money in current times. What does this actually achieve with millions of Americans out of work? Work for ppl from Florida? I'm stumped.

Nasa's budget for 2010 is only 0.5% of the federal budget (GDP).  The people that caused the global financial crisis received more money in bonuses last year than NASA's entire budget.

Greeted by blustery weather and deep blue skies, an Atlas 5 rocket soared into space Thursday morning, successfully placing an $848 million satellite on track to probe the sun and unravel its fundamental affects on Earth and society. Liftoff from Cape Canaveral came at 10:23 a.m. EST
It was in and out of the clouds.. didn't have my camera with me.

also, a Proton rocket will launch from Kazakhstan at 7:39 p.m. EST tonight with communications satellite. http://tinyurl.com/ykwqceg
