We have a big gun safe and we keep the guns locked up in there when nobody is home. It's bolted to the floor. A lot of bad guys get firearms from break ins.androoz wrote:

if someone wants to kill you, they're gonna kill you, even if you live in a place where guns are illegal. people will just acquire a gun illegally if they want to.

It's a very nice neighborhood. Houses are all $400,000 and higher. Much higher. As I've already said, Warren Buffett, the second richest man in the world or was, lives in my neighborhood. The police are largely useless when it comes to personal attacks and muggings, unless there happens to be one walking by you when you are attacked they will not save you. The problem with making guns widely available to the public is that instead of the odd criminal here and there owning a gun you end up with every crook and crackhead in the land owning a gun... resulting in a society where pretty much everyone is strapping, walking around in a state of paranoid fear, itching to fire their weapon at the first sight of trouble because they believe the other guy will shoot first if given the chance.krazed wrote:

Getting a gun isn't that hard in any country, you just need to know the right people. Old military depots tbh. But things like tazers and mace's should be legal everywhere... especially for women since theyre the highest target group for robberies.
So one minute you're talking about how nice your area is, you leave all your doors unlocked for some reason and even Warren Buffet has one of his used-once-in-a-decade houses in the area.1stSFOD-Delta wrote:

Protip, maybe your idyllic neighbourhood isn't quite that then. Lock your doors if you don't want people coming into your houses and murdering you. Americans are fucking weird sometimes, why would you even ever have your house door unlocked. Unless it has to do with some gay neighbour hood rules which I always hear about in the USA, or unless you want to do that because you want someone to come in so you can (finally) get to shoot someone (need to justify the gun purchase and all that training and money eventually) or unless you refuse to acknowledge your neighbourhood is a piece of shit despite Warren Buffet and that locking your house would mean admitting you don't live in a utopia or some shit.
This has gotta be one of the most retarded posts I've ever seen, not even in a personal way, just so much wrong with it.

It wasn't just this neighborhood, they were hitting all of the nice neighorhoods. Ours had more problems well because we're closer to the shitty parts of town. They didn't have to go as far. As for people not locking their doors, I agree with you. You are just asking to get your home broken into, but this neighborhood never had any problems with crime so i guess some people figured nothing bad would ever happen. They were wrong.1stSFOD-Delta wrote:

Me having guns has nothing to do with all that though. We've always had guns even before we moved here. I've lived out in the country most of my life and there eveybody has guns and there's very little crime.

Getting a hand-gun is particularly difficult in this country, even our regular police don't get to carry guns. I only ever get to SEE a handgun when I see detectives or armed response police, never mind use one (or even hold one). I'm glad that there isn't a high level of gun-ownership in this country, I wouldn't have it any other way.Cybargs wrote:

Definitely agree with the pepper spray part.
(Then again, I think she shouldn't be imprisoned for carrying a gun, assuming she isn't mentally ill or a criminal.)

A classic example just recently would be that cop who drew his firearm at a snowball fight, or the cop who executed that handcuffed guy at the train station in San Francisco... people are often far too quick to get the guns out. I'm not saying everyone is of the same mentality, and obviously it varies from State to State, but to an outsider it does appear to be an issue... the statistics on US gun crime would appear to support this argument too.RAIMIUS wrote:

It could also just be a wider social issue specific to the US. Switzerland has a high level of gun-ownership and yet very low gun crime statistics. The philosophy behind gun ownership in the USA and Switzerland is almost identical, i.e. the desire to have an armed militia in the event of the nation ever being invaded or threatened, and yet while Switzerland have maintained a very low level of gun crime the USA has gone off the reserve so to speak. What gives?

I agree. I think there are many factors, all contributing, but none really being THE factor. Economic distrobution, more individualistic society, ethnic/racial/economic mixing, etc.Braddock wrote:
