Just got a new modem at my place and this one is just a modem.  So I need a router.

I would like wireless only for when I have visitors.  So it don't have to be the best in that area just something that can give me low pings on servers via a wired connection.

Thanks!

I'm running a Netgear Wireless N150 that seems to work pretty well.

That was my intention when I bought it.

But it's so badass, I don't even need it.

I like the idea of being able to buy something without doing a bunch of stuff to it. Does it bridge?

I got that because its..

1. Linksys
2. Cheap
3. Wireless

Its not that powerful of a wireless but i'm only getting if for company anyways.  Thanks for the comments.

lol2. Bottom line: Linksys is not Cisco, a few mere businessman exchanged signatures.

I've had hit-and-miss experiences with Linksys. The BEFSR41 was pretty miserable. Some of the better wireless routers can be loaded with a custom OS which will help a lot.

But, if you want a really awesome router, set up a scrap machine with Vyatta or Smoothwall. There are others, like IPCop, but I only have experience with the first two. Both have web GUIs, but Vyatta has a much better CLI.

The only similarity between a Cisco router and a Linksys router is that the money goes to the same place.

It does depend really. I am always very critical of Linksys because of this silly Cisco connection bullshit - when in reality their Cisco branded products bear no relation to their Linksys branded products.

But some of the top end of the Linksys line are quite good.

The RVS 4000 is not a bad bit of kit for example - but compared to even an 800 Series Cisco router it's not even close.
