So I managed to save up 2500 to get me a used dirtbike. There are tons for sale in my area. I have rode dirtbikes before but nothing bigger than a XR 100 and that was a few years ago.
Is there anyone on this forum who rides "DIRTBIKES". I don't care about street bikes. I need someone who knows what they are talking about.
I need to know what size of bike would be good for me if this can be answered. I am 5'7" and weigh about 150 lbs. I am a beginner and looking to ride strictly trails and some track since there is a track where I live. I am not looking for making this thing street legal. So whats a good bike?

if you've been on a 100 before, i think you will be able to guestimate. i'd say a 250 if you can stand flat footed at rest, a 125 otherwise.

try before you buy, if you can . . .

get a 250cc two stroke.  ATG is an avid rider, ask him.

I stood in line for four hours. They better give me a Wal-Mart gift card, or something.  - Rodney Booker, Job Fair attendee.

125 2 stroke or 250 4 stroke

With your size and experience, a 250 2 stroke would be a bit much.

Do you think a 125 would be to small? I want something I can control instead of it controlling me

Honestly, you fuck up on one of those things and it controls you, doesn't matter to the size.

No.

125's are very quick.

I have a KX250 2-stroke. It's too fast. I'd much rather have my old CR125.

A 125 is not too small for anyone. They're fast as shit and much easier to control because of their weight. Unless you weigh more than 250lbs, get a 125.

4 strokes are ghey.

I've ridden a XR80, a KX125 and a RMX250. Gotta say I liked the 4-stroke best. That said, if you're a small dude get the 125, they're plenty fast enough unless you're racing at a high level.

I recommend a suzuki DR 400.

They are light and good for basic jumping and whatnot and also street legal.

Street legal is huge. There a zillion awesome trails off most stretches of blacktop.

Get tires rated for 80/20 ( dirt/street) unless you plan on 100% dirt.

This

I've had my DR-Z400 for about 4 years now and it hasn't missed a beat.  Fantastic for trails, easy to ride but not slow and the street legal part is a massive advantage if you just feel like going for a blast spontaneously.  If you're a beginner I'd recommend against a 2 stroke, as they can be a bit of a handful sometimes, plus all the extra work you need to do on them is a pain in the ass.

I would go street legal but I wont need to. All the trails, back roads and logging roads around my town can be reached by just going out of my driveway without going on the road. I live on a private dirt road.
