An arrest in which several punches were thrown has triggered an accusation of brutality against Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, police from the mother of the 18-year-old honor student who was taken into custody.

Police, in a criminal complaint on the incident, say "closed fist strikes" were used by the undercover police officers, but only to subdue the teenager as he tried to get away.

His mother said she plans to file a civil rights claim against the officers.

Terez Miles said her son, Jordan Miles, who is black, thought his life was in jeopardy when three white men jumped out of a car on the night of January 11 as he walked not far from his home.

"My son tried to run thinking his life was in jeopardy," Terez Miles said. "He made three steps before he slipped and fell." After that, she said, the police used a stun gun and beat him, pulling out a chunk of his hair.

The criminal complaint says the officers, considering Jordan Miles' appearance suspicious, got out of the car and identified themselves as police. He tried to flee, fell, and then struggled to escape.

So what do you think should be done if it does turn out the police didn't identify themselves?

If the police didn't identify themselves as police, it would be reasonable for the kid to fight or run. Pretty sure most of us here would try to run if a car pulled up on us and 3 big men jumped out and went after us.

At the same time if they had stopped or given more time to ID themselves as police if would have put themselves in danger if the teen was an actual threat. The extra few seconds to ID themselves as police may have gotten them shot or stabbed. So I can understand the police perspective.

So if you had total and complete control over punishments or rewards for both parties how would you 'make the situation right?'

how about we wait until the court decides and we hear everything before we make a decision?  the news tends to be disturbingly inaccurate.

All it takes is for them to yell out "Stop, Police".  That simple really.  Why were they checking this kid out anyways.  Were they just driving around looking for random kids walking and then jumping out to see how they would react.  Seems suspect to me.

Yes. And the truth always comes out at trials involving police brutality.

The criminal complaint says the officers, considering Jordan Miles' appearance suspicious
To be fair, he is black.

This is why only uniformed Police should be arresting people on the street.

I guess for a white American to truly put themselves in this guy's shoes you'd have to imagine three plain-clothed black guys jumping out of a car confronting you saying they were undercover cops... what would you do? An initial suspicion that a racially motivated assault was about to take place might be reasonable enough? Depending on the city you're in, and the level of racial tension therein, your response might vary. I don't know Pittsburgh but I'd imagine there's plenty of places in America where a black man would panic if three white guys ran out of a car at him with no discernible police markings... and likewise for a white guy being confronted by three plain-clothed black guys.

the arresting officers could write anything on a report and its considered strong enough evidence in court.
