As I understand it, a 60 seat majority would stave off any filibuster attempts by the opposite party.Dilbert_X wrote:

they need 60% to prevent stalling tactics, they can still get it through... it just takes much more effort and time.Dilbert_X wrote:

Personally I think its great. American politics weren't meant to be controlled by one party so that compromises would need to be met, and both sides would have input on issues.
There is truth to this. However it also means nothing gets done.h4hagen wrote:

I would muc hrather have the media go back to its old ways of being the watch dog for both parties rather than a propaganda machine for Obama and socialism
I and many others think that a system or political climate in which minor parties have a big role to play are preferable to this current situation. It seems that the only tactic in opposition is delay.h4hagen wrote:

This is significant however. It means they can not shove shit through without being examined and scrutinized. Not good if you are liberal.Spark wrote:

Well that's what oppositions do. The difference elsewhere is that the government has an alternative to putting up with it.Dilbert_X wrote:

Can't recall a time where the republicans held a 60 seat majority with owning the white house the house and the senate.. I might be wrong though.Dilbert_X wrote:

American politics, lol.
People demonizing opposing party politicians as 'antichrists' before they've even done anything and singing from the rooftops the minute their own party win seats and before they've actually done anything themselves. It's like you're all supporters at a fucking football match or something. I just don't understand blind, black & white, party support, but good luck with him. Maybe he'll help clean up some of the fucking mess BOTH parties have helped create over the last couple of decades.

The premis being, we have already fallen off of a cliff with the democrats, he might have a parachute. Or are democrats the only ones allowed "hope" and "change"Braddock wrote:

The Bush regime had already driven the US off the cliff like some sort of Thelma & Louise ending before Obama even took over, you just weren't interested in being saved by a blue parachute... instead you blindly hope that there is a red parachute somewhere. That's the problem with American politics, everyone out to support their own party with no concern for the common or greater good.lowing wrote:

Braddock, I was looking to write almost the very same posts you did in this quote... fucking well done. Nothing further to add from my side except some karma.Braddock wrote:

That's an interesting democracy. One party has the presidency and massive senate and congress majorities and they can be prevented from legislating by the opposition.eleven bravo wrote:

well the intent of the opposition is to bring the understood will of their constituencies to the congress, im sure a lot of people love the fact that its no longer a filibuster proof majority. It really wasnt before, considering joe lieberman.

It prevents massive instability due to ideological splits when the party in power changes over. Instability plays havoc on economic growth among many other things. Most of us wish our government would return to the time when it met once a year instead of being in session for 9 months out of the year. We want our government to be inefficient because it prevents it from growing over-large. When Congress is deadlocked, the people aren't getting screwed.CameronPoe wrote:

I really wouldnt want congress only meeting once a year. Thats what they do in china man. 1.3 billion people, their legislative session meets once a year. They have led in their dog food, massive massive corruption and poisoned baby milk.

Bush dd not drive us over a cliff, not even close. Obama is the one that has driven us in so much debt there is no end in sight. That is not to say I agreed with the initial Bush bailouts, I did't, but Obama has really fucked us up.Braddock wrote:

In less than a year people have realized just how destructive Obama is to America and is now scrambling to stop him.
