Hugo Chavez finally lost the run of himself by nationalising a chain of French-Colombian supermarkets because they dared to raise their prices in the face of a currency devaluation that by default means their imported product will cost them more. These new 'social supermarkets' will provide cheap necessities to 'the common man'. Doesn't he know where this leads? Has he no concept whatsoever of economics? Is it so impossible for him to see the flaw in his plan. Where is the reason and rationality? I refuse to believe somebody can be so delusional. At least Venezuelans are being hoist by their own petar and will ultimately learn their own lesson from their own mistakes. Zimbabwe here they come.

I suspect he doesn't give a fuck about economics, only about making himself look good to the poor fools who keep voting him in. If that means making their lives worse, so be it.

I don't think he's that self-absorbed. I think he honestly believes he's revolutionising and making Venezuela a better country. But where's the rational and logical workable economic plan? The mind boggles. When oil becomes obsolete/runs out (not that far off) he'll be looking pretty fucking stupid.

Were I a foreign corporation with infrastructure in Venezuela, I'd strongly consider some drastic action.  Many who have paid attention to the news over the last year or so have heard of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged and would know what "going Galt" entails.  Without spoiling the book, I can't go into further details, but those who have read it will probably know what I mean when I suggest such corporations should think hard about making preparations to "go d'Anconia" in case they are suddenly nationalized by Chavez's revolution of stupidity.

Any Corp that "goes Galt" in Venezuela would just give him a reason to take over their corporation and since companies are mainly focused on making money, you will not get all the corporation in Venezuela to sign onto that and you will have a few companies that would look at all the other going on strike and seize the chance to gobble up more business and favor with the government by propping up the country.

The best thing would probably to just have a coup and kill Chavez.
Should get the CIA on that.

But they're moving ever closer to full blown communism.. it will become an egalitarian promised land, no?

What Chavez practices more closely resembles communism rather than socialism.

And that has worked out so very nicely for those who practice it...

Chavez is also threatening to seize business that raises prices as a result of devaluing the currency. Any short-term benefit, which there really won't be for Venezuela, is far out-weighed by the long-term consequences of devaluing one's currency. This has also resulted in a black market exchange rate for dollars. There is also a looming power crisis ahead.

The sad thing is Latin America has so much potential, but their governments are horrible.

Yep...  it's pretty fucked up, but the only reason someone like Chavez rises to power in a given country is because the predecessors are usually equally bad if not worse, but they tend to favor the rich rather than the working class.

For example, look at the government that preceded Castro.  It doesn't mean that communism is the answer, but these things have a context.

The most productive way to prevent communism from taking over a country is to improve the quality of life for the average person via a combination of industrial investment and governmental programs designed to give the poor more economic mobility.

In short, socialism + compassionate capitalism prevents labor revolts and such.

Unfortunately, Central and South American countries often go from one extreme to another due to a combination of bad leadership and outside meddling (from various countries including us).

Hugo Chavez is both the worst and best thing to ever happen to Venezuela. I lived there for a year pre Chavez and it was a shit dump.
