Is Africa ever going to become "Civilized"?

I've been reading a lot about Africa lately (Wikipedia and random google sites) and I really wanted to go there sometime, just to see what it's like and discover near cultures and things.

Then I started thinking about movies like Blood Diamond and Lord of War, and about all the History Channel and Discovery Channel shows I used to watch. They show a poor place with "No hope". You've got the South African region (Starting near Congo) where 40% of the people have AIDS (forgot the exact percentage). Then you have places that have become developed like Tunisia, Egypt and Morocco, where life isn't really that bad.

Hundreds of different languages and dialects are spoken on this continent, and plenty of religions to go with them. It seems they just can't get along.

Why do you suppose Africa is the way it is? Why hasn't it kept the pace with Europe, Asia and the Americas?

And furthermore, what would you do if were in charge of some run down African country?

Burkina Faso and Egypt seems to be doing alright.

Edit: I think Guns, Germs and Steel explains shit a lot better... But a very very long read. Might as well just watch the Nat Geo special.

Yeah, but take note of where the main African population was. And where Ulundi the capital was located. The above graph shows where the imperialist nations went crazy with the railroad arms race more than anything. And again, that was raping the nation of natural resources.

It was the British who were openly fighting the Zulu. Who didn't go down without a fight mind you, take the battle of Isandlwana as an example. But the final outcome was always obvious when you had a well trained and armed British military against men with spears and cow hide shields.

I know this is impossible but say you were backed financially by several rich countries. And you had say, 10'000 troops. Could you go into some African country, begin building schools, hospitals and roads by teaching African workers on the job. Then when it all built, you start bringing tractors and stuff in and having them work for themselves.

My uncle went to Africa and he said they won't get better anytime soon because they keep refusing help or using the money for other things.

But then you have towns like Mogadishu which I think will never get good.

Firstly Africa is a continent, not a country ...

Most states in Africa have become civilized long ago ... depends if you use the term civilized as we do in Europe and the US, it's not directly the same ... remember that's it not that many years ago the last state claimed their independence so many of the states will still need time to develop and try out different forms of government before Africa as a continent will prosper ... that is IF we allow them to be part of the global community ...

Wars will be fought and people will be killed in much the same manor as Europe was shaped ... and my personal opinion is we must let that happen without to much involvement or we'll just prolong that process

I just saw some pictures of huts and people wearing tons of face paint. Those people could be living in homes with children getting a proper education and medicine against diseases.

Oh and tbh more condoms need to be sold in Southern Africa.
