Why is it considered a bad thing to be a nihilist when nihilism is just another branch of philosophy? Always see people use the word nihilist as an insult so why is it looked down upon.

Because objectivity begins where natural instinct ends. Even the "rational" people that want proof for whatever they're expected to believe skip from a Descartes style starting point to a "natural" starting point where all or most of our basic instincts are assumed to be rational or even good. Anything that pokes into that moral inner sanctum is at best controversial and at worst taboo, e.g. abortion, torture, suicide, etc.
People don't understand the reasoning for any of these types of questions because there is no reasoning for them, but they can't have their most fundamental beliefs based on nothing. As those feelings are nearly universal, it's a lot easier to scoff and let most of the weight of the argument lie on numbers rather than argument. Look at this thread for example.
