Try the demo before you get Shift... IMO it just feels off. My vote would be for GRID or DIRT 2

But if you want to build your cars from the ground up you jus' GOTTA get some Lego Racers in there
I agree with this. The cars have no grip.

Need for speed: Shift??

You have got to be kidding me. That game is horrendous.

I haven't played a good racing game on PC in many years (The last being NFS: Porsche Challenge), but I've heard GTR 2 is very good.

Try the demo for Live For Speed.

One of the best racing games by far IMO. The demo is limited in content, but has no restrictions as far as time or the number of uses... Actually kinda a lot of people just play the demo for years.

if you want to do, you know, "real" simmulation, check out LFS, rFactor, GTR2, GTR-Evo, etc.. Those don't tend to have a lot of car customisation options, however, nor do they have any real "story" in the SP.

For what you're looking for, I'd say NFS:Shift..

I never played rF too much.. GTR-E is very fun, and I failed to get LFS to work. I'll go try again sometime.. They have go-karts, correct?

How do you fail to get LFS to work, lol. Its a file you unzip... it doesn't even have to install
(actually, they changed it so that it "installs" but all the installer does is unzip the game, then add a desktop icon if you want)

And no, LFS has no go karts. It has an FSAE car, which is a small single seater open cockpit, open wheel race car.... It may be what your thinking of, a lot of people confuse/call them go karts... but they are pretty fucking different.

Thought you were one of the rFactor guys... I know there are a few on this forum. I have a license, but never got real into it. Street cars feel terrible. Mods are cool, but so many are shit. The only thing I liked in it was the Porsche Cup mod. I never tried the real feel plug in, heard that helps a bit... But very happy with LFS, especially the LX cars (Lotus 7 clones)

If you like sims give it another try. The graphics are not amazing, the race tracks are imaginary, and content is semi limited... but its a simulator, and the driving is fucking great and with the tire physics rework that they are working on it should get even better.

This.

GTR-Evo is excellent. I think there's a new Race 07 add on now too, but I haven't tried that.

I'd definitely recommend trying the demo's for each of these games.

I know the last new NFS games haven't been good but I really loved Shift. The best driving game I've played for a long time.

I was really looking forward to Dirt 2 but when I played it I was really disappointed. The cars handle horribly and the game seems so 'long winded'

I dunnno but personal preference really. But definitely try the demos

Haha. At last a genre I can comment on.

The last NFS game I played was Undercover. It had exactly what you want: fully upgradeable cars (with sticky tires and turbos). On top of that, a nice big raceworld (if a little monotonous and uninteractive) and plenty of different types of races (and cop chases!!!). The reason I stopped playing the NFS series was that the physics were absolute shit. Not only that, but it felt like I was simply playing on of those old Mariokart things. The last NFS game I ebjoyed (and still play today) was the Porsche Unleashed. One of the best racing games ever made: dedicated engine, very good focus on the brand and thus exact replications of driving experience (as far as I can tell; I can't honestly say how a 1958 356A cabrio handles) and a factory driver mode that required real driving talent. It was once said that anyone who beat it could consider themselves a "fully licensed professional virtual driver", whatever that means.

Now, I've played every Colin Mcrae game for a decade. I'm truly sorry to say that DiRT 2 sucks. Physics and graphics are great, but it's not a driving game anymore. It's a bit like an arcade again; I prefer playing it with the keyboard as opposed tol my G25, and the game modes are repetitive. I'm a huge rally fan, and was saddened to see that facet of the franchise eclipsed. Hell, you know when your codriver says "easy left" instead of "80 left 6" that you're playing a game meant for people who have no idea what they want in the game, and are not willing to invest time in learning how to play it. The original DiRT was a lot better in that regard, and the rallies there needed real skill to master.

GRiD: same thing as Dirt 2: arcade. Not real racing, but still fun to play.

As for the rFactor, LFS and GTR2s of this world: very realistic sims, but you need a good wheel to truly appreciate them. I would avoid them, especially given that you want that upgrade element.

So yeah: a useless post: no rommendations apart from NFS Porsche, but I hope it enlightens you a bit.
I like pie.

You should try Trackmania United Forever, it has really nothing to do with Nations, it has 6 others environments to play on, an insane, track editor a very tightened community for the most part.
TMUF doesn't have any collisions between the cars, that makes sure that you only focus on driving and not actually on trying to push your opponents in the walls, or worse, block the road with your vehicle, which often results in tight races.

TMUF doesn't fit it any pre-established genre, it's just driving at it's simplest.

I've been hooked with Trackmania since 2004, and I just can't stop playing it.

It only costs like 30€, try the demos of Nations and United if you have a doubt, although they don't represent the final product.
