My first RANT!!

I'm just going to get straight to the point, I hate planes.  Up until a few nights ago I never have much of an issue with planes, but then came Wake Island.  When Wake Island came out I quickly recalled the challenge the US faced in 1942 of simply beaching on the island.  I never would have guessed that with a good pilot and a crappy defense system on the aircraft carriers that it would be near impossible in BF2.  When I jumped on the other night the US was loosing bad, but I thought, "No biggy.  Next game"

The next game ended 170 to 0, and I spent the whole game trying to shoot down an airplane without success!  ERRRR!!!  The plane would do none-stop loops above the aircraft carrier.  I'm talking 10-12 straight loops.  Never leaving.  Just painting circles in the sky.  I tried shooting him as he went up, I tried shooting him as he went down.  I tried my gunning skills leading the target.  Nothing.  And if I did scratch the surface he'd leave and come back 5 seconds later.  WTF!  I've flown all of 2 times, have they made planes so damn gammy that loops are as easy to do as flying straight.  Even in 1942 your plane could stall.  Second, does one fly-by the landingstrip totally re-arm them?  It seems to be that if Coppers have to sit and wait then Planes should have to do mulitple fly-bys to get back to 100%.

I just can't get over the fact that I spent a whole game unable to shoot this plane down.

Well, it takes a fly by to refill either bombs or missiles (you can get both filled if you line it up right and are flying slow enough). It takes like 4-5 passes to get from half to full health. Considering the USS Essex gets two of those anti air weapons, I think you should have no problem kill planes.

Ya, maybe if someone else was on the other gun we would have succeeded.  But none the less.  I couldn't get a single missile to hit him...well at least not enough to blow him up, and that thing I think shoots 4.  The loops just simply shook the missiles off his tail and he never had to come out of the loop.

Skills aside you have to admit that for a missle battery system that is NOT a Stinger Emplacement but a ship based missle system, that the carrier defense is pretty crappy. Its really only effective against incoming helicopters. They are not supposed to be stingers. These are surface to air missles. For pete fucken sake make them faster and make them less likely to lose their target. They already limit the range of them to pathetic distances. If a pilot is stupid or ballsey enough to strafe a carrier then they should know that there is a damn good chance that they will be shot down. The same thing goes for a main airbase. Give it real surface to air missles. Stinger emplacements are good for on the spot air defense and temporary bases. But for actual main airfields it seems a bit wimpy.

Get a team mate, create a squad and co-ordinate the 2 gun emplacements on the essex.  Most people don't even realise the is a second emplacement near the UAV up the ladder.  Also the Unit fires 8 missiles each.  If you fire off half of them at a target, fire the rest off asap so the unit will reload.

The problem with the ship based defenses and all SAM's in this game is that they try to fly directly to their targets by aiming at their current positions. This makes it really easy to lose a missile with a sharp turn. Real missles continually calculate an intercept path and fly to where the aircraft will be by the time the missle gets there.

No to mention the fact that once it loses the target it seems to always go after a friendly!  Has anyone ever shot at one enemy but hit another?  I don't think I have.  But I've sure gotten TD or TKs because the stinger lost track of the plane I shot it at and went directly for a friendly helo!

Once, I just spamed like all 6 missiles out of my J-10 at two slow flying JSFs. They both flared out, my missiles did a complete 360 and took out a BH and a Cobra like 300 feet in front of them.

I wonder if there is actually code in BF2 that makes it more likely to accidentally lock on to a friendly than an enemy...  Maybe to deter people from just launching missiles without waiting for a lock (shooting at a jet as soon as it is close, even if you don't have a lock yet).

i've never actually hit anything (team or enemy) when i don't have a lock with Iglas or Stingers.  i don't think it's possible.  they just fly straight out and up into the air.

If you aim close enough to a heat source (even w/o a lock), they'll usually head for it. Missiles on planes usually fly twoards the sun if you dont have a lock =P

One interesting thing that I found out last week:

I notice if I am trying to dogfight with another jet, and I am switched to ground bombs instead of air-to-air (so he doesnt get a lock signal) and another jet is trying to engage me with missles, I dont bother with flares.  Time and time again, I noticed when either air-to-air or ground-to-air was fired, they ended up locking on the my target instead of splashing me.

Now with that being said:

1)  The jet I was targeting wasnt using afterburners or evading me (no afterburner animation or evasive manuvering)

2)  Seems like this is a bug, as I should be the closer of the 2 heatsources.

3)  Im not the best or greatest fly boy out there by any semblance of the word.  Look at my total flight time.  But I can fly good enough to keep it in the air and not crash after takeoff.
