Sex; appropriate age of consent? Before or after marriage?

I would like to debate on a topic that will have had some impact on most of our lives, at some point.

I live in Illinois, United States where the legal age of consent is seventeen, however this age differs between countries. In some countries you have to be married others you have to be thirteen and so on. For a complete list, look at the bottom of this post. My question is this; what do you believe the appropriate age of consent is? Do you believe that sex is something only to be enjoyed by the married? I would go on to address the issue of homosexual marriage but I don't wish to overcomplicate the topic. Please reply with explanations to support your choice.

Age of consent should be 16, but if it's say a 17 and 15 year old it should be fine as well. You shouldn't be sent to jail and marked as a sex offender because you and your girlfriend got it on.

Before marriage is fine IMO. I'm not a big proponent of 'casual sex' but to each his own.

It's 17 here in texas.

My proposed: 16 and within 2 years of partner, but hard limit 15 (so a 16 year old and a 14 year old couldn't, but 16+15 or 17+15).

Give out condoms, ???, success.

16 seems like a good age. But I'm not really comfortable putting an age requirement on it at all, as people mature both physically and mentally at different times and it really should be up to the people involved to make the proper informed decision for them selves, which would require education from a young age.

And yes, 16 is a good age. I myself "gained manhood" at the age of 15, she was 6 months older than me but already 16. And before marriage (d-uh).
