I know that Colin Powell did ROTC, and went from there. I know a lot of them went to the service academies. But what's the path like? Are the only people who reach such high ranks people in combat arms? It's something that has always been in the back of my mind. I've tried google but all I get is fucking Yahoo Answers.
West Point + Keeping your record clean + politics + time served = General

You don't 100% need it but it sure as hell helps. They all look out for each other. We had one West Pointer platoon leader for about a month, then he received a promotion and ended up on a staff.Hurricane2k9 wrote:

Becoming an NCO has to do with how over or understaffed your MOS is rather than unit. If the MOS has a low turnover rate and lots of people in senior positions the cutoff scores will be high. This usually applies to small, technical MOS's. To become a senior NCO in a larger MOS is not as difficult. To make 1st Sgt in 20 years is not that difficult, to do it sooner and then go on to SGM or CSM you have to be 'high speed' as in hitting your promotions as soon as they become available to you rather than when they get handed to you due to time in service and grade. I've seen people make E-6 (Staff Sergeant) in 4 years because they busted their ass, had a degree and were model soldiers. If you half ass it, no.
But, there's no reason in the world to go into the service with the intention of reaching the high NCO ranks if you can instead go in as an officer. Finish college and go to OCS if you want to join (or join your ROTC program).

Stay in the military as an officer long enough without getting let go, secure an important job, and it's yours.
I met a couple Generals.

Speaking of Powell, not to degrade him, but it helps you if you're a minority in making general as well

Major General Robert T. Bray, and a General who retired my uncle from the army. My uncle was part of the Joint Special Operations Command at the time. SF beats all.Hurricane2k9 wrote:

My Grandad was a full colonel in the Marines for about 8 years (was in the Marines far longer, I mean was at that rank). He fought in Vietnam for a long time ( http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=132274&p=1 ) But never made it to General. He wasn't politically savvy at all though, I think that was his biggest problem.

edit: John I have a double edged sword. I am technically hispanic (which helps for things like jobs and college apps) but I look white (so I don't get profiled). Would Powell's gift also apply to me?
