Thats not so much an intel thing. We broke the German and Japanese codes during WW-2
Thought it was more choosing to give him an open escape route. Then we screwed up royally, by letting an Afghani warlord 'negotiate' his surrender. Funny.. apparently 'negotiate' and 'facilitate' must share the same root word in Dari

Wait, the title is wrong. They aren't being charged for capturing terrorists, they're being charged for beating one up whilst he was in custody. Those two are very different things, the first one would be much more of a "WTF", the second, well, it's gay, but not so gay.
Of course they're not being charged for capturing a terrorist, do you know how bullshit that would be. I don't know where people get this shit from.

I am trying to understand what kind of superior would take action against soldiers that forcefully detained the guy on the wanted poster, brought him back with a bloody lip and, oh, alive, and then when asked about the bloody lip they said "uhhh...yeah that wasn't us."
It's like lying about what you ate for dinner. It is so insanely minor I don't understand why anyone cares.
Tell that to the NSA & CIA.Dilbert_X wrote:

Sometimes you let the natives lead the armored column liberating their homeland, and it works (Kuwait)Dilbert_X wrote:

That and failing to place mines, troops or surveillance on his most obvious escape route.rdx-fx wrote:

OICI was offhandedly throwing insults at the CIA.
I'm guessing that to a "hardcore" SEAL that might be almost as bad as deathVaregg wrote:
About the Seals I doubt they will be punished, my guesstimate based on similar cases worst case scenario is a dishonorable discharge ...
Worst case is damn harsh. A dishonorable discharge makes you a felon. Can't vote, can't own a gun, have to put it on every single job application etc.Varegg wrote:

From everything I've heard, the British found Bin Laden, had the opportunity to capture him and were asked to stand down by US forces so they could capture him themselves (quite possibly this was due to the fact the British government had made very clear that if they captured him he would not be released into US custody unless guarantees were made he would not face the death penalty).rdx-fx wrote:

There were a couple of SBS or SAS teams on the ground with Thomas Greer "Dalton Fury" and his Delta group. Along with a couple of Afghani Warlords, Signals intel guys, Air Force combat air controllers, Ranger QRF and the odd CIA, Civilian, or Marine.Bertster7 wrote:

This is often used by conspiracy theorists as evidence the US don't want him caught - personally I think it was all just a big screw up.

So what is the true story?rdx-fx wrote:
All of it covered in a variety of books, (regardless of NDA's signed by the authors). The book Kill Bin Laden by 'Dalton Fury' (pseudonym) focuses on that incident rather specifically, as he was the US commander of the operation.
