The art direction is more "real" in the sense that by having a world that looks unique, you justify the game's mechanics.

It's like how Valve said that they made TF2 look like a cartoon because realistic looking art wouldn't be realistic given the absurdity of the game's mechanics. Same thing with Borderlands. By making the game look realistic, they need to conform to reality. And as such, Borderlands looks realistic in the Borderlands universe.

I've had it since pre-order and am still playing Borderlands quite a bit. I don't have a favorite character because I like them all. I don't mind that the game is slightly cartoony and I find the "dark humor" quite amusing (Especially 9 Toes "He ALSO has 3 balls."). The game's replay value is very good; the Playthrough 1/Playthrough 2 architecture reminds me of Diablo 2's Normal, Nightmare, and Hell modes.

The only thing I don't like about the game is how the quests work. If you try to simply plow through the main quests, they often become too hard without doing the side quests. However, when you've done all the side quests as well, the game seems too easy. I wish there was a happy medium.

I don't mind it. You can cherry pick the side quests you like and get along just fine. For the 2nd playthrough I'm mostly skipping the side quests so I can go back once I'm level 50 and co-op with my buddies.

I wish the multiplayer functionality was better, and open modding would be a godsend. There's SO MUCH you can do with this game, but it seems to be mostly "go kill x" "go kill x and press y button" "go see z". So much potential just bottled.

btw, can someone link me to an official site where it states the ports that need to be opened? I googled but every hit gives me different ports
