*sigh* I want to play some more MW2 but my gaming PC is fucking BSOD central at the moment.
on the downside... a lot more game-lobby-closed and host migration (although technically you can't blame iw for the increase in the second... although i guess you could blame the system for picking rq'ing nubs as hosts)

technically, we can blame them for implementing the system, and thus adding a problem that was never there before.Spark wrote:

first impressions... there's no reason why anyone that enjoyed the casual, spray-n-pray, noob-friendly Modern Warfare 1 should not enjoy MW2.
all of the new stuff, namely IWNet, isn't quite as bad as all of the boycotting bandwagon made out. i played for 2 hours tonight, about 20 rounds of TDM in 3-4 lobbies, and none of them lagged. the average ping IS around 100-200ms, but everyone is on a level playing field and there is never a noticable 'lag'. i never felt as though i had a delay or a lack of hitreg because of the network, which i guess is 'good enough'. not great, but it works i suppose. not being able to choose map/server etc. is a pain, a universally expressed one, but meh.
having no peeks is the killer for me, as i said it would be. coming from hardcore cod1/cod2, my playstyle is just affected too much by having to jump+prone around every corner, or to slowly crouch+strafe out. it feels console-based, it feels noobish, it feels shit, period. you can no longer, for example, clear a corridor of shit-skilled enemies by peeking out and kicking arse. you now have to jump out and wholly expose yourself... so even the best player with the greatest aim will struggle to fuck everyone up without getting sprayed down himself. i suppose on console it's not so bad because people still have to react with their crappy controllers... but on a mouse+keyboard set-up, not having the quick-reactions and fine-control of peeking is a serious flaw. period.
maps+weapons were good. slightly more impressive than cod4, in my opinion. weapon sounds are actually fantastic... the audio is good. as for all of the new perks, gadgets, challenges and all the new extra crap- it's fun, but a bit meh. having a range of different titles and emblems is a nice touch for personalising your 'i kick ass' persona, and with the 10 levels of prestige mode and the whole range of challenges and titles to attain, it definitely has a longer lifespan than MW1.
haven't played single-player, but i found MW's campaign dire and predictable, and this will undoubtedly be no different. wont waste my time.

Singleplayer is worth a go. Nothing groundbreaking, but still not a bad experience. My biggest problem with the single player is probably that it treats you like a retard (probably because consolers are).
I think it just assumes you have ADHD.Little BaBy JESUS wrote:

ah fuck off with the hypotheticals. "if i was in your shoes i'd do xyz blahblah and do it way better 123abc". sssh. the point i was trying to make is that such a task is made harder, arbitrarily or rather for no reason at all, by removing the peeking/leaning feature. it was integral to the playstyle of the call of duty games, and im really pissed that it's missing. so many of the missions and maps feel like they would be massively enhanced if you could just lean around the damn corners...DefCon-17 wrote:

single-player feels a little detached. too cinematic, perhaps. whenever you kill an enemy (or even a civilian), you just feel so damn detached from the game. im not sure if its the engine or the death-animations or what... but making your way through levels, each and every enemy feels likes an annoying fly that you routinely wipe out, instead of an actual person that you take-down. i think the 'mega' scope of the campaigns in MW/MW2 kinda devalues the art of killing bad-guys, if that makes sense. there's just so many of them, and the story throws so many big explosions and hollywood moments at you... you don't feel like the central protagonist at all, just a guy sat watching an interactive film.

Just saying. I'd have a harder time strafing to the correct position, then leaning and shooting.
On another note:
I am so fucking close to buying this stupid game... D:
So a question for you guys: For pure and simple fun (Multi and co-op), is it worth the money?
Ignoring any "not leet enough" thoughts....just fun.

Is it a gaming revolution? No.
Is it a unique gaming experience? No.
Is it fun? Definitely.

far from revolutionary and unique, yes... it's modern warfare 1, dare i say 'improved'.
let me explain this from the perspective of a total call of duty elitist: modern warfare 1 was frustrating and shit, in my opinion, because it still had the pretense of being a 'serious' modern warfare game. you had competitively-balanced maps, you had promod, you had 14-year-old kids like mintsauce thinking they were the next fatal1ty by playing it; you had game mechanics like peeking and lots of standardized, league-like weapons (e.g. the AK/M4 Carb being absolute assault staple weapons). but then there were perks, then there were killstreak rewards - the whole mixed bag of annoying, noobish features that just broke the 'pro' continuity and made the game a total ragefest. the maps were designed for competition, sure, but they were way too small. the weapons were fairly balanced, but then again they were easy as fuck to use and had no skill curve. the game was just a big contradiction, and so thus it wasn't really fun. the only people that played it seriously and enjoyed it were people that obviously missed out on the genius of cod1/cod2-- people may accuse me of having rose-tinted glasses here, but until you've scrimmed in these games, you REALLY have no point of comparison.
although, by comparison, mw2 is a success because it doesn't fail it its own pretenses. it's just as chaotic, random and noobish as mw1, only it has removed all semblance of 'pro' or 'elitist' pc features. yes, that is a shame for the dumb kiddies that wanted to continue being the next 4K^ after modern warfare 1-- but to me it just feels as if infinity ward have totally cut the bullshit and have admitted (and designed) a game that is for consoles. and it's fun, for what it is, as long as you don't take it too seriously. enjoy the chaos, enjoy the 100's of on-screen pop-ups, random perks, silly little features and accessories that don't add anything except a temporary gimmick. it feels like the modern warfare series has finally outgrown any notion of trying to be like their older, harder and better cousins: the original WW2 call of duty titles. it's slightly odd. the best thing i can recommend is if you buy this game - not counting single-player which is obviously much the same - approach the multiplayer as a completely NEW and different game. cod1/cod2 this is not, it couldn't be any more different... but it's not exactly a straight follow-up to MW1 either; i would say that the game has further found the 'niche' in pc gaming that modern warfare 1 (frustratingly and confusingly) started to carve.

i don't know why they removed peek either... other than pure developer laziness. there's no possibility for lean/peek on consoles, so i guess they just never bothered for PC. there is no other excuse- it's a pretty minor thing to introduce to a game, with a massive change in gameplay and skill. it's a shame. a small part of me really really wants a patch with peek/lean in the (far) future. i can live without dedicated servers, being spoonfed the IWNet rubbish... it's another matter when the actual gameplay is degraded.
