Ceara Sturgis, a tux-wearing lesbian was denied her picture being published in the yearbook. Why? Because she was not dressed “traditionally.” Read more here.

One of the most memorable events of high school is going to take your Senior yearbook picture and waiting for the day those books come out. The Senior’s pictures are usually a little bigger, in color and it represents you and all of the hard work you put into graduating.

This year, Ceara Sturgis, a public high school student in Copiah County is being excluded from her yearbook for wearing men’s clothing in her picture.

Ceara is an honor student, trumpet player, and goalie on the school’s soccer team. She is also openly gay and says she does not even own girls clothing, she just wanted to represent herself, and dress how she felt comfortable.

American Civil Liberties Union is now involved and the school could be facing legal action, as Ceara mother has also hired an attorney.

A local TV station discovered that in the 2008 Wesson yearbook featured a “Backwards Beauty and Beau Pageant,” where students playfully dressed in clothing of the opposite sex. It is odd that they are okay with that, but have trouble with an openly gay student dressing in a tux. Sturgis said in an interview,

I'm usually pretty fair on issues like this and am not a homophobe at all, but doesn't the other students have a right to a year book not full of outrageous photos? What's to stop a person from posting more extreme year book photos just because they can or because it would be "hip".

no

it's a god damned yearbook not some work of photography that will be seen by millions at The Louvre

edit: In my experience most people just keep yearbooks because of all the signatures they have in them

What the fuck does that have to do with anything? Clearly she's a pre-op transsexual if she doesn't own girl's clothing but dates a girl. Why is she labelling herself as gay?

They should be able to wear what they want, within reason.

If they're required to wear something formal etc, then fine, but if its casual, I guess its over the edge.

Perhaps the right response in some aspects, but its for the wrong reasons.

Short of obscene or vulgar no. It's a thumbnail sized portrait. Chillax, she has the right to represent herself. I'm no fan of the ACLU (in general). But I hope they take care of this.. public schools should encourage freedom of expression. It's a tux.. not very outrageous imho.

It's not the point. The point is a girl is wearing a male item of clothing to a yearbook photograph. What if a guy turned up in a dress and asked for his picture to be taken in that? She has a right to represent herself outside the constraints of another person's decision, but being in a yearbook is not a god given right and thus it's not her choice. It's up to the school to decide who/what goes in there and I completely back their decision.

Discrimination is your choice/belief, I get that. But since this was a public school, one that ALL of the taxpayers contribute to she should be allowed to take a picture of herself in a tasteful manner. Which she did.

You don't have the god given right not to be offended. Not in my society.

What about, since the year books cost each student about $80, from my own High School experience wouldn't the vast majority of students buying the year book have a right to a product which they find tasteful?

No one has the right to exclude part of the class.. Just a little perspective, please. We are talking about a thumb sized picture.. If I recall correctly most yearbooks are produced by a highschool committee. One that spends the year documenting school events. It is their job to create a product that sells. However, if you are putting the entire class in there you do not have the right to make special rules because you didn't like the way someone expressed themselves. Especially after the fact.

Do you really find that photo to be "outrageous"?

Thumb sized non attention grabbing photo that one years from now may assume the corresponding name of the other sex is an editor error?  I defer to Chaney.  Later.

What is disrespectful about deciding against conforming to standards that pay no respect to you and your choices? She dressed formally, and tastefully. I've seen men who looked worse in a tux.

Or are you being facetious?

So, it's ok when it's funny...

...plus, it's one tiny picture in a yearbook...the only reason anyone knows about this is BECAUSE they refused the picture...

...plus, the other kids go to school with her on a daily basis.  I doubt they were surprised at all by her choice of wardrobe.
