I was thinking about this earlier today and realized that I have zero incentive to actually contribute to society .

Now at the end of the 4 years of school I'm taking I'm going to end up with $40000+ in student loans, which is great. Since my parents make way over the cut off for Government College Aid I have to take out loans since they want their money up front every semester.

But I could instead move out of my house into a small apartment, spend like half of my income on just rent and end up being able to get a bunch of government social program money that'll not only help my survive but at the same time they'll pay for my school since I just made myself poor.

Now considering I have a choice between putting myself $40,000+ in debt or taking government money to pay for my school, why exactly should I or hell anyone else actually contribute if we'll get a free ride?

You're government assistance will not pay for $40,000 in student fees. You'll get some rent assistance. Help with paying utilities. That should be about it. You're better off not exploiting the system, since it's not going to really benefit you anyway.

Also, do you need that $40,000 up front or to be paid off + interests at the end? How does your student fees work in the US?

Yup live with the parents, student loans pay out per semester not all at once.

I'm making the point as the system is designed now, there is no point in trying to actually work for what you get when the government will just give it to you if your poor enough.

Not sure how hard is will be to claim on all those. We're given rent assistance here if we move out and have to juggle a low income job and/or student fee's. But our major student fees (mines about $30,000 AU) don't get charged until we're actually earning a decent income and even then it's interest free with just a small percentage of your pay taken.

But $3000 for a 6 month period isn't going to go far if you're not living with your parents and have to pay rent, food, utilities, transport, textbooks, list goes on...

State covers transport with very cheap bus passes for all enrolled. The state as well as the school offers to pay a bit for low income students, Welfare and rent assitence would cover rent and food. Move into low income housing and the Utilities would be cheap or if I'm lucky covered by the state.

That's only $500 per month.

You have to pay for all of that on like $125 per week.

If you think that's a cake walk then by all means.

You've got it much easier staying with your parents and getting a job than leeching.

You are seeing Government subsidies towards education as rewarding failure and punishing achievement, others see it as giving some people a chance to succeed where they could not before. It's not even a complicated subject really, I'd have thought everyone could see the benefits of governments doing stuff like this.
