I know this won't happen, but wouldn't it be good if, as an alternative to an unlock you could upgrade an existing weapon? Say two upgrades for every unlock slot.
How this could work is that every weapon could have a fixed number of upgrade slots. For instant, you might be able to attach an accessory rail to the M4 that could mount a laser sight, or another weapon could have an expanded magazine.
