So the FDA banned tobacco products that contain any flavoring besides menthol. They say it's to stop kids from smoking.

That's just bullshit.

Thoughts?

The only tobacco I smoke is flavored tobacco. Sure I won't be smoking tobacco anymore, which is healthy, but since when the fuck could the government force my hand? That seems un constitutional and I am outraged.

What's next? The ban on flavored liquor because that makes kids want to
become alcoholics?

Wow, that's retarded. My favorite way to smoke tobacco is a water pipe with flavored tobacco.

Most kids that start smoking are starting with unflavored cigarettes anyway.

Now, I'm not having a go, but why whenever the Government try to do anything do the people always accuse it of being 'unconstitutional'.

Here we have the government trying to improve the health of a nation, and you're saying it's unconstitutional. Damn patriotism, the constitution was written fucking years ago. Obviously they wouldn't have banned flavoured tobacco back then, but they didn't understand the health complications it lead to.

Why can't Americans take the advice of the Government sometimes?

Maybe because the USA was founded on the basis of criticizing the governments every action? That governments become corrupt with power, and that the people needed to be aware of it's actions?

Hmm, fair point. I still get pissed when they pull this one out of the hat though.

It's exactly the same when British kids are asked why they're vandals and chavs and shit: 'Well if the government gave us something to do, or somewhere to hang out'. Same excuse. Generation after generation.

Nicotine is not addictive? So, I guess the people struggling to quit just REALLY suck at breaking habits?

One could quite easily argue that the nation's right to life and property, which is limited by taxes, supersedes that of your freedom of choice. Considering your usage of patently unhealthy substances (you as synecdoche for all of the nation's kids smoking tobacco) causes such a net drain on our health care system, and on the health of the nation in general, the government is really preserving more important rights at the expense of less important ones. It's not significantly different from the limitations imposed on free speech by the Supreme Court.

In essence, your right to smoke tobacco infringes on others right to life and property, and since the latter two are more important than the former, the proposed legislation is not unconstitutional.

(On a side note, it's about the only way I can see the government justifying the criminalization of marijuana, were they intellectually honest about why it was proscribed.)

Consumption of cigarettes produces a negative externality on society.. ie. a cost burden to society. In order to correct for these, the government is well within its rights to tax and regulate the sale of cigarettes.

Good job by the FDA.

Our country recently imposed a tax on the "alco-pops" to make them cost more so teens are less likely to buy them (or as many).

It's like they raise the price of those to make the teens buy the harder stuff at the same price. https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v83/rac_goshawk/crazy.gif

That's because the government, for some reason, failed to realise that alcopop's and spirits are nealy perfect substitutes for teens who just want to get drunk.

Ok, so when is the fat tax coming? I'll wager that the obese people in this country are a far bigger drain on our health system than smokers are. I don't see anyone proposing a tax on people with high BMI. Hey, let's fine them $1000 for every pound they are overweight, every year. We'll end up healthier as a nation, right? Freedom is an all or nothing thing. Once you start letting them dictate how you live your life you are no longer free.

Maybe they should add a bittering agent to all liquors because there are some that taste sweet and since they are sweet teens might drink them. Same logic.

I already pay about $7 worth of taxes on every pack of cigarettes I buy. That tax is supposed to pay for my economic health burden. What more do you want from me?
