I was being serious. "Traveling the world" is a waste of your time. You said you could spend years of your life paying off student loans, why add on to that?

And before you say "They I'll just not go to college" good luck finding a job. The percentage of jobs that require a degree is getting larger and larger, so in the end you'll not save any money by not going to school.

Now you're going to pull the "I'll go to school when I'm done" well in that case you'd likely get thoroughly pwnd the first semester, as it has been so long since you applied what you learned in HS. A 4 month summer did a real number on me and I don't want to know how bad a 9 month one would be.

But hey, if "finding yourself," whatever the fuck that means, is that important, and can be accomplished by spending loads of money in countries less different from your own than you would like to think, then what can I say?
you really don't have any idea what you're talking about do you lol

1) i've already said I'm going to college, and yes I'm going to go when I'm done with the trip. Considering I'm doing pretty much nothing this senior year (like most seniors) that whole "you'll get thoroughly pwnd the first semester" argument is null as plenty of people do just fine. The adjustment would be hard no matter what.

2) it's not even just about finding myself. it's getting away, getting a change of scenery and again, broadening my horizons. but I wouldn't really expect you to get that

Yeah good luck.
In 1999 I went for 3 weeks and it cost 5.5k.
My brother went over in 2007 and spent about 4 months and it cost him well over 30k and he slept on park bench's some nights and the trains many other nights.
My mother went over last year for 3 months and it cost about 20k, and she got free flights and accommodation with relatives for 2 weeks.

You'll need lots more money if you're going for that long, especially if you intend to hire a car or sleep in hotels.

Also I suggest going to Dubai and Egypt while your over there.
It wouldn't be just me though, I'll be going with other people...so we'll split the cost 3-4 ways.

I was thinking about Egypt. I've always wanted to see the pyramids so it's a possibility. Is there any way to get there that's not via plane though?

I completely disagree with that sentiment Doc. There is always a reason not to do something like spending thousands on a world trip, particularly in this stage of life where education and starting a career are at the forefront of people's minds. But you know what? Fuck it. Even if it's not a good idea when considering finance or career opportunities or any boring bullshit that ensures an uninteresting, structured and unfulfilling life, sooner or later you've just got to throw caution to the winds and do something stupid.

Am I meant to wait 'till I'm old and decrepid with a dried-out old crone accompanying me before I can "sensibly" travel the world? A big Ty "fuck right off" to that. I want to travel when I have the energy to enjoy it to it's fullest, when my concerns are more along the lines of "where am I going to sleep tonight" or "who the Hell are these people" or "where am I going to get enough money to get home" rather than "I don't quite trust the quality of this Hotel's bedlinen". I would much rather travel when all the hassels and problems that come with world travel are "exciting" instead of "something to write to the manager about".

$1000 in bonds
$2500-4000 from grandparents
$3500 from working/saving up (especially if I get a better, higher paying job...right now I'm only making 7.65 an hour)
$500-1000 other graduation gifts, might even sell some sports game used stuff for some cash

and i'm sure i'll find a way to make more money somehow

Ty, if you ever, EVER - the way life unfolds, i say 'take no chances'. that could go Doctors way or Ty's way. i know i should be dead, a coupla times over, and i can't really say if either view is right. what i can say is if you have your heart set, and am willing to put in the time, that's what you will benefit from.

i'd like to see the photos if you go.

It wouldn't be just me though, I'll be going with other people...so we'll split the cost 3-4 ways.

I was thinking about Egypt. I've always wanted to see the pyramids so it's a possibility. Is there any way to get there that's not via plane though?
There's really not that much in the way of 'splitting' the bill. Everyone's got to eat, everyone's got to get entry to where ever you go, everyone's got to buy plane/train tickets. Which basically leaves car hire/petrol and accommodation. With more people you'll probably want a larger vehicle (you wont want 4 people plus luggage in a VW polo for example) and the same with accommodation amusing they don't just charge by the bed anyway.

Now taking your 9k budget lets break it up.
Flights 2k return.

That leaves 7k for your 19 or so weeks. Or about $350 per week or $50 a day.

Because of your age car hire will be either expensive or just impossible.
You'll be lucky to get a car for $40 a day, (probably be cheaper to buy a car). Then you have petrol, which is like $10 a gallon. If you don't get a car it restricts mobility a shit load and you have the cost of train/plane fares which can be well into the hundreds. Lets estimate travel costs at $15 a day (after been split between 4).

$35 left for food, accommodation and entertainment.
If you want to eat in any restaurant (including shit like McDonalads) its a minimum of $10 a meal. 2 meals a day is $20. Alcohol on top of that.
A bed a the seediest youth hostel will set you back no less the $20 a night, which leaves you a grand total of -$5 for anything you wanted to do or see while you're over there. It can't be done unless you rough it like a gypsies and eat 2 min noodles for 4 months straight.

Either you need to shorten your trip too something more reasonable (like 6-9 weeks (even then it's tight)) or find a shit load more cash. Europe is an expensive town to live and and even more expensive place to visit, and the US dollar isn't going to be doing you any favours. Think about the total cost of living at home and then triple it and that's what you should be aiming for.

what? coming to EU without seeing CPH?  You must come here and check out wonderful copenhagen.

It is not traveling the world, it is travelling europe. I think it would be a good start, the rest of the world can wait till you get a bit older

TBH, South East Asia, or South America would be much more suitable for the budget he's suggesting. Plus they are probably better appreciated while young as there would be a lot more physical activity involved. You can visit Europe in a wheel chair and not miss much.

*Cost Breakdown*
He's American, so I believe that 9k is USD, so it would go a bit further then that...

My brother and some of his friends recently did a 6 week trip around the world, going through both the US and EU. He had something like 15k ($AU), and was able to go sightseeing and such, and not have any trouble with money.
There was a problem with his luggage though - he had his case stolen from the luggage compartment on a train in Europe. Keep your passport on you at all times, you don't want to lose it like he did.

$9000 US is approx, $10200 AU or 6000 Euro.

He's also planning on going over 3 times as long as your brother.
