The media, but I can't help but feel there was something else that happened that we're not being told about.

This is worse than AF1.. it was actually reported as an attack without verification.ghettoperson wrote:
They're under no obligation to do do, however that doesn't mean that on 9/11 of all days it'd be a bad idea to do so. Yes, it's mostly the media's fault, but that's not to say that the Coast Guard couldn't have used some sense. People freaked out when Air Force 1 was flown over New York, why would a boat chase on the Potomac be any different?FEOS wrote:
Media. Period.
The USCG is under no requirement to notify anyone they are having an exercise, except for those they must coordinate with for airspace and waterway clearance. Period.

i think the poll illustrates it beautifully

It was a god damned boat. One single god damned boat. What if someone had been robbing a liquor store in the same area? Would that also have been reported as a terrorist attack?Turquoise wrote:
Again... if you saw something that appeared to be an attack, wouldn't you report it?mikkel wrote:
The Coast Guard did absolutely nothing wrong. The only thing that makes September 11th any different from September 12th in this regard is sensationalism of the kind that lowbrow outlets like CNN thrive on.
When a media outlet causes multiple law enforcement organisations to respond to a report, and causes air traffic to be temporarily shut down, then no argument you can make can take away from the fact that this was sensationalist and absurdly over the top.
Would I report it to the authorities to be investigated? Yes.Turquoise wrote:

Should the media broadcast unverified reports to an audience of millions? No.

Reporting FAIL!
No. Common sense would suggest that they notify the DC police, FBI, and DoD. Which I'm sure they did.Turquoise wrote:

Nothing appeared to be an attack. It appeared to be a few boats making high speed circles in the Potomac...which happens all the time in that area.

NOT if there were already MULTIPLE USCG(in this case) units on scene. It would just unnecessarily clutter up the dispatch.
Also, in regards to common sense, I like how CNN reported that there were no less than 10 shots fired, while the coast guard said that not a single shot was fired. Also, it's easy to say that you called but didn't get a response. So, that argument looks great for them after they already fucked up the number of live rounds fired.....
EE (hats
little part : coast guard - they may do this 3 or 4 times a week but come on ...... really on 9/11 of all days .... really .... and when CNN called to ask if this is real and the coast guard just sat their and drooled on the phone ........ * psssst * " hey coast guard this is why every other branch thinks of you as the retarded kid in class "
big part : CNN - numbnuts hears shit going down on the radio .... thats happens 3 - 4 times a week and they go nuts ..... they hear " Bang Bang I got you " over the radio ........ not bang bang from a rifle but some dude saying " Bang " ......... they ringie ding up coast guard and .... no-one says anything so they take it as the green light too balls to the walls with this story

CNN is trying to make up for the piss poor reporting they did with the Iranian situation.

Alrighty then, I don't want to hear any of you complain when the media doesn't report on something then, because it might just "clog up the dispatch."mikkel wrote:

It was reported on CNN here that shots had been fired, that CNN had contacted the coast guard press office who had been unable to say if it was an exercise or not.
Not sure how much of that is true though.

CNN. They could have called the USCG or MPDC and asked if there was a training exercise going on or something.
If they really did do that, then the blame would lie on whoever they contacted.
