CCP Games CEO Hilmar Pétursson delivered a keynote presentation at GDC Europe in Cologne today, and unveiled the project their Shanghai studio has worked on for the last three years: DUST 514, a console MMOFPS set in the EVE Online universe.

Massively speculated in the past that CCP's hiring of console developers was in connection with either the EVE Online FPS or the World of Darkness MMO. The timing of the DUST 514 trademark registration led us to believe this would be the game title announced at this week's GDC event.

So then, what is DUST 514?

According to the game trailer, it's "One universe, one war." While EVE Online lets players struggle against one another for dominance in space, DUST 514 will let console gamers fight for control of planets in EVE's setting of New Eden.

The company stated, "The primary gameplay of DUST 514 features brutal ground combat that takes place on the surface of planets from EVE, delivering the visceral, adrenaline-fueled experience of futuristic firefights. Developed for the current generation of consoles, DUST 514 combines equal parts battlefield reflexes and strategic planning, giving commanders and ground infantry real-time configurable weapons and modular vehicles to manage dynamic battlefield conditions."

https://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/08/duststagingareaat580.jpg

In his talk at GDC Europe today, Hilmar stated that DUST 514 will reach out to two different audiences, fans of first person shooters and MMO players, and their aim is to ultimately meld the communities of EVE Online and DUST 514. He elaborated on this and explained the various ways that the two games will tie in with one another.

DUST 514 will figure prominently into the CCP Games strategy to revamp EVE Online's system of galactic control, called sovereignty. It was originally discussed in the current issue of EON magazine that planetary control would be an aspect of changing how EVE's player alliances gain control of territory. Apparently, what players can do in DUST 514 will also play a major role in EVE moving forward. Hilmar explained more about how the terrestrial gameplay of DUST 514 will be interconnected with the ship-centric gameplay of EVE Online.

Currently, player alliance sovereignty (regional control) is tied to maintaining numerous player-owned structures across different solar systems to establish a territory as belonging to that alliance, and as shown on the game's star map. Since DUST 514 is set in the same galaxy as the core MMO, with the same planets, EVE players will have the option of contracting DUST (player) mercenaries to gain control of planets.

Hilmar said, "DUST battlefields will dictate who control specific planets inside the EVE MMO. If a player contracts a DUST mercenary team to go and conquer this district of a planet. Then ultimately he will be able to control the planet, and therefore the solar system, and therefore the constellation, and the region."

He explained more about the interplay between EVE Online and DUST 514. Hilmar said, "You will increasingly have to fight with your fleet [in EVE Online] but you will also have to contract people who play DUST, the console MMO, which then feeds into the sovereignty control system of EVE. Then EVE feeds back into that again by funding the mercenaries, giving them goals." In a nod to Starship Troopers, he said, "The fleet does the flying, the infantry does the dying."

When you bring these two communities together, that "one universe, one war" means that the EVE PC MMO and DUST 514 console MMOFPS gamers will form interconnected social structures and meld over time.

This is CCP's hope, anyway. Hilmar says he'd like to see specific DUST corporations and alliances that bridge the gap to the EVE MMO, as the ground game adds new dimensions to the space-based gameplay of EVE Online as we know it today.

Hilmar added that the backstory for the DUST infantry will tie in with an upcoming EVE Online novel, which we think will most likely be Hjalti Danielsson's The Burning Life. He did reveal that the cloning technology that imbues EVE Online's capsuleers with immortality has been adapted for broader use, and is applied to the ground-based warfare that comprises DUST 514's gameplay. Further revelations of the DUST 514 story will likely be held back until EVE Fanfest 2009.

He stressed their commitment to this new direction they're taking the EVE Online IP, and that DUST 514 isn't just a side project they're working on. Hilmar said, "We are leveraging all of CCP's international infrastructure into this project." The game has been in development for three years at the CCP Games Shanghai studio.

The new MMO announcement came as part of Hilmar's presentation "CCP: Winning the War" which was a look back at the company's history, from their early days as a small, unknown company trying to create something different to today, where they stand as a major MMO developer.

This is what we know about DUST 514 so far. Gamasutra was on the ground at GDC Europe today for the game announcement, as was Develop, so further info can be gleaned from their event coverage. More details on DUST 514 will be announced at EVE Fanfest 2009 this October in CCP's hometown of Reykjavik.

We don't have an official teaser trailer for DUST 514 but Golem.de shot video footage from the "CCP: Winning the War" presentation, which we're embedding for you below.

UPDATE 12-09-2009

Most Planets (gas giants, lava planets, barren planets) are not suited for human presence, those WONT be battlegrounds, says Petursson.

Conclusion: This unfolds the true potential: There will be planets where no troops can land, there will be planets with less sectors than others, there will be systems with more planets than others. So, a good portion of planets can be conquered SOLELY by fleets. I foresee a huge lot of individual fleet fights, just over ONE system. The fightings over ONE single planet within a system can already be epic; not to speak about the whole system. And then, maybe THEN an alliance can even THINK of constellation SOV

All older media/press/images/articles about Dust see page 28 of the thread. Incl. video with ALL game footage youtube.com

Fact: WiS will be released prior to dust
Fact: WiS has been renamed to Incarna
Fact: Incarna comes 2010
Fact: An overhaul to the planets will come in 2010
Fact: CCP is already "damn far" into Dust and its been for 3 years in development already
Speculation: Through incarna, eve commanders can issue strategic (not tactic) orders towards the ground troops; probably by the usage of some command room
Fact: Eve Players can send isk and equipment down on the planet to support the ground troops
Fact: The # of players in a battle can be 24 - 256
Fact: In the winter-expansion we will get to see which planets will be assigned battlegrounds
Expected: There might be a playable version on the fanfest
Fact:Petursson about a PC version: The focus is on the Consoles. He repeatedly refused to give answers on a PC version
Fact: CCP has secured the trademark dust514 for Xbox, Ps3 AND Pc
Fact: Dusties have access to various weapons, combat vehicles, including air units
Fact: Some weapon-platforms will be modular (including weapons / vehicles)
Fact: one of the modes in dust is "Domination", its about capturing + holding strategic important points
Fact: Various Buildings can be installed in a combat-scenario, e.g. weaponturrets
Fact: Vehicles in Dust can be fitted like eve ships, with several low-, medium-, high-slots
Fact: Planets have several sectors which need to be conquered before someone can claim souvereignity on a planet
Fact: One single Battle is always about one sector of a planet
Fact: Dust will be a persistent world
Fact: Cosmos will play a huge role for the communication between both communities
Fact: Eve Players cannot watch a battle on the ground, dust players cannot watch whats going on in the space
Fact: The pure FPS Part plays only a small role in the big picture
Fact: Dust has RTS and Strategic Elements
Fact: Dusties get experience through battles, become stronger and get access to better equip
Fact: After Launch, Dust is being constantly updated with new content
Expected: Direct communication between Eve and Dust players
Fact: Winning a dust battle will grant ownership for that zone. Conquer enough zones -> the planet will be yours
Fact:Once enough planets in a system are yours -> SOV over that system
Fact: Eve players will have an interface which allows interaction with planets and their various zones
Expected: Airvehicles in Dust can bombard ground troops (NO orbital bombardement though)
Expected: Gallente Airvehicles can launch combat drones
Fact: Fleets and Dusties need to cooperate for success
Fact: Dusters will be prify to a form of the EVE cloningsystem
Fact: Dust is only ONE part feeding into SOV
Fact: Dust will have a commander system
Fact: Dust will feed 0.0 SOV AND faction warfarfare
Fact: WiS lays ground for for future stuff

This has the potential to get very serious, especially knowing the kind of battles that go on in EVE.

Console only. Failure. There's a huge thread in the assembly hall protesting the console only bit, go support please.

Looks good, ill bite.

I reckon they'll release to PC after a few months, this might just be a ploy to get CCP more known across other platforms, and then draw them into subbing for EvE.

Like i said, the console market is new to CCP, i seriously think they'll release it for PC. they practically have a guarenteed market there, it'd make no sense not to.

Well, as of right now it's console only.

I mean, what are they thinking? By releasing it on consoles only they'll get an influx of PC players to come play EVE? Doubtful.

They should be trying for the opposite - getting EVE players to play their FPS. I would. I know a lot of others would too. Console kiddies won't like EVE.

I was just about to add on "or vice versa". Still seems unlikely though.

How many people play EVE? Is there a rounded out number?

300k? Maybe more active subscriptions. I think peak is 55-60k at one time.

Do want. 2142 got old, halo sucks, maybe this will be the fix. Is there any info on weapons, or kits (if they exist)?

I actually think the concept is good, the merging with the eve world that is. They will bring it to PC though, I´m sure. Most likely split up the universe between console and pc gamers, but I´m interested

The game has been in development for 3 years, but only been announced just now. Not much info out. The only info I could find is that it is an FPS with RTS and MMO elements. Fighting takes place on planets to control zones, and if you capture enough zones you control the planet. This will effect the PC EVE game directly, although the two can not interact together (Dust cant see fleets over planets, EVE can't watch DUST battles) but the corporations and alliances can be joined.

I'm gonna tinfoil a bit and say that the character models look the same to those displayed in the "Walking in Stations" previews so we may see a PC version directly built into the eve client.

If it was built into the eve client it may be harder to write hacks and padders ect. Which is my main problem with a standalone pc version of this game. Metagaming goes deep into eves history, almost from the beginning and if an Alliance can pay some RL money to guarantee that they will win a planet through Aimbots and hacks it will happen.

You probably could, and I assume that fleets would be able to manufacture weapons and equipment for the dusties.
