ryan last.fm never cost money to use. you can optionally subscribe, but it's not a fee-service. the additional radio and streaming stuff has always had associated costs or optional pay-to-use benefits. it's not the focus of last.fm though, last.fm is a social-networking and profile-building database site. if you want streamed media, go for pandora or spotify. ur doin it wrong.

yeah kmar. i always tried to promote last.fm in 'earlier' days as a service that wasn't even supposed to compete with the likes of spotify/pandora/blip.fm. ive used it since the earliest days, before all the streamed and social features were even there- back when it was just a barebones stats-recording site, and that's still the reason why i visit and use the service everyday. the charts and the database is beautiful. recommendations, events, artist info, tagging etc. love it.
