All meat practically tastes the same, I guess seafood is different.SEREVENT wrote:

Meat rarely has any flavour of its own, it's all about what you do with it.

My neigbour in France keeps animals too, like many people in the village. He's not a farmer, he's a retired construction worker. He's truly thrilled when a young lamb is born, he feeds it from a bottle and shows it to children. When the lamb is old enough in autumn or winter, he slaugthers it. I tell you, dans la campagne, an animal is a pet untill it becomes a dish.krazed wrote:
not all farmers do it for pure commercial gain
there are quite a few who raise animals purely for food
it's not THAT different

All meat does NOT "taste practically the same". If it would, why then would mint go with lamb, but not with pork? You can do what you want with meat, but shit meat is shit. The other way around, you'll have to do very little with good meat. Proper beef can be sliced thin and eaten raw with no seasoning at all and still be a treat, which doesn't mean it doesn't taste better with a little fresh chili peppers and onions. Salt does not flavour meat, it enhances the meats natural flavour.
People always compare unknown flavours to chicken because chicken is very bland on itself. Actually this is not true, it is only bland because the chicken people generally know is from (semi-)industrially bred meat-chicks. If you have a proper chicken and/or if you treat it properly it is not bland at all (Caucasian chicken + laurel leaves + BBQ = Yummie & Michelin Stars if the guide would reach that far). In any case it is only sensible that people compare any new flavour with the piece of food that has the least "flavour identity" of its own.

My father ate dog when he was in the Philippines. He said it tasted like pork, but was stringy.SEREVENT wrote:

I wonder what dogs farmed for eating would taste like...
Reminds me of when I was younger and went to stay at my Dad's friend's farm. I made friends with the lone pig. It was a really friendly beast. Grant, (my dad's mate,) came up to me later.:Lai wrote:

"I see you're getting along well with the pig."
"Yep."
"Good, 'cause he's gonna be your dinner."
