I got up to 117 in my Astra Diseasal going up to Derby from London
Yeah that is illogical, knowing a mazda 3 top speed is 118mph.Finray wrote:

130mph in this ...
Sport + downhill + wind + car manufactures giving lower than actual numbers = 140mph.DrunkFace wrote:

speedos always say over what you do. so if your speed says 30, you're most likely going about 27. i think its just a safety thingy. to properly tell how fast you're going you need a like a sat nav or something. my speedo says 100 and the sat nav says like 96 so you prob weren't doing 140 even if it did say it on the speedo.Finray wrote:

and to agree with others, i doubt it could go 140 anyways. what engine size is it?
Probably a 2.3 liter 4 cyl. Unless it's supercharged or turboed, I highly doubt 140.
not broken, just wrong.Finray wrote:

Therfore broken. @ Shadow so if by what you're saying, we weren't going 140, we were going 137. It's a 2l btw.FatherTed wrote:

Next time/if we do it again I'll get a pic of the speedo to prove you non-belivers wrong.
Nope, not broken, just not accurate. most stock cars are like this.Finray wrote:

Reading up on the Mazda 3, the 4 door (2l) has a top of 130, and the 5 door 126. in practice you wont hit the mechanical top speed.

Manufacturers always put their top speed lower to make their car seem safer. It's the 4 door version. Going downhill and with the wind behind you is easily enough to add 10 mph onto the 'maximum' speed.
A quick google reports that the 0-60 time is from 8-9 seconds, but when we did it ourselves (addmitedly not that scientifically with a stopwatch) it came in at around 7.

7.....
no
for a quick comparison, a focus ST hits 60 in 6.8-6.5s. Thats with a very very smooth 2.5l turbo.

nah they get less and less accurate the faster you go. so it is probs further off than that. but anywhom im not really interested lolFinray wrote:

Doing it safely is another story.
I've done almost that in one of my older Alfas (which strangely came with a nice digital speedo someone had left in the ashtray (sticks on the windscreen) - I've still got it somewhere, it's a racelogic driftbox (I think, that's what it says on it), which also gives G readings, 0-60 times and millions of other things I've never used), with only a 1.8TS engine (my current one is more powerful). That car, as well as my current one, both exceed the manufacturers stated specs substantially.
Manufacturer specs are typically fairly fudged. 0-60 times are often quoted as being much longer than they actually are on regular cars and quoted as being much shorter on fast cars. Top speeds almost always are quoted below what you can get out of the car - whether it's good for it is another story.

And the clock showed 140, but it was actually 134, we gps'd it one night when we were bored. Tailwind helped, can't break '130' otherwise
