Truth.
Tipping is a custom over there because the waitresses and servants are paid significantly shittier rates, and depend on the performance-commission style wage contributions. People that 'tip' in the UK are just people looking for an excuse to clear out the spare change from their wallet, nothing else.
Um, not really. They usually make okay wages but on good nights they can rake in anywhere from $100-$400 in tips. One of my friends works at a wings place downtown and once she actually made over $500 in tips in one night.
Was that how much she received directly from the tables, or how much she had at the end of the evening? Realize that those that serve the food must also split the tips with the greeters (those that welcome you and take you to your table), as well as the cooks, and some other staff.
It can vary by location, but most places will make the bulk of their money during the week on the lunch crowd, and during the evening hours on weekends. If the waiter/waitress are not working these shifts, they will not make nearly as much money, and when all is said and done, a waiter/waitress is an average food establishment will make in the area of $10-13 per hour.
