I don't tip because I am a cheap arse, nothing to do with how I feel or how I am. They have their hourly wages. If they don't like it and want to rely on tips, get another job

I ain't fucking forcing you to work there.

Truth.
Tipping is a custom over there because the waitresses and servants are paid significantly shittier rates, and depend on the performance-commission style wage contributions. People that 'tip' in the UK are just people looking for an excuse to clear out the spare change from their wallet, nothing else.
if the bill doesnt include tip, i dont know anyone who doesnt tip, that is as long as the service is ok. If you don't tip when its not included on the bill and the person deserves it, then your a douche.

Bullshit. I don't know anyone that doesn't tip at least 10%.

Quite literally NO ONE.

Depends on the restaurant, really. In America the custom is to tip your waiter in literally every circumstance, for every meal/service. If I'm eating at a classy restaurant where big money is being spent, then yeah it's more typical to leave a tip as a custom of respect and gratitude. In America, the mentality is a bit different - they want a tip because it's part of their basic income, not a frivolous bonus.

Um, not really.  They usually make okay wages but on good nights they can rake in anywhere from $100-$400 in tips.  One of my friends works at a wings place downtown and once she actually made over $500 in tips in one night.

I think that we've become a nation so influenced by American culture, it's almost rude not to tip. It's almost as if we feel we must tip waiters/resses.

Obviously it's not going to apply to every job in every town and city...

I'm sure some waiters do make good money in tips for providing a good service, that's the whole incentive of doing such a hard job, right?

Indeed, many waiters/waitresses get paid under minimum wage here ($2.50/hr or so for a starter at chilis IIRC) and make most of their wage via tip. I hear though if you work overtime, you have to get paid minimum wage, so they really bank. Anything under 10% is fairly rude, anything over 20% is quite frivolous. $2 is about right for a $10-12 meal.

Was that how much she received directly from the tables, or how much she had at the end of the evening?  Realize that those that serve the food must also split the tips with the greeters (those that welcome you and take you to your table), as well as the cooks, and some other staff.

It can vary by location, but most places will make the bulk of their money during the week on the lunch crowd, and during the evening hours on weekends.  If the waiter/waitress are not working these shifts, they will not make nearly as much money, and when all is said and done, a waiter/waitress is an average food establishment will make in the area of $10-13 per hour.

What?  You have to pay minimum wage - you can't pay someone $2.50/hr.  I tip because people are servicing me, not because I'm trying to supplement their income.  I was caught off-guard as far as the whole not-tipping thing in the UK.  You know what else was weird?  Not getting a glass of water at a sit-down restuarant.  I had one place even tell me they didn't have water   Is it not customary for you to get a glass of water when you sit down for a meal?  I don't know, its been a while since I've been over there.

Thats apparently what she regularly makes in a night, $100-$400.  Obviously it varies on the time and day of week, but still, making that much in tips plus $7-$10/hour is pretty amazing, especially for a student.

I always tip at least 10% and I'm Dutch. Guidelines used to be 15% here in Holland when waitresses didn't get tipped through the bill, but 10% now they do. Honestly though, hardly anyone younger than my grandfather still does give at least 10%, if they give any tip at all, especially younger generations. Waitresses are usually quite pleasantly suprised if you do.

Actually standard hourly for waiter/waitress is $2.38/hr. As a bartender I get $5.00/hr. At the end of the year I owe between $3000-$5000 combined to the State and Federal governments. That is if I didn't pay quarterly.
