BMW will withdraw from Formula 1 at the end of this season.

The German car manufacturer, who took over Sauber in 2005, have cited "current developments in motor sport" as the reason for their decision.

BMW has announced that it will withdraw from Formula 1 at the end of this season.

The German car manufacturer dropped the bombshell at a hastily convened press conference in Munich on Wednesday morning, saying the move was part of a “strategic realignment” in which it would increasingly focus on environmental sustainability and that F1 did not fit that agenda.

Hmmm, well, after last season they stopped development very early on to focus on this year, and this year they are right at the back...Id say that this has been coming. In fact, didnt that get hinted by the commentators on the weekend?

I suppose its too late for one of the 11 new applicants to fill their place and get that 26car grid.

Heidfeld doesn't deserve a f1 car anymore anyway (it's been a long time since I heard about "quick nick"), same with kubica.

A lot of the bmw-sauber-team will find a new position in the new teams of next season.

I reckon Peter Sauber, who has a 20% stake in BMW Sauber when they took over from Sauber in 2006, will buy out the team ala Ross Brawn with Honda and bring Sauber back to the grid.
