In Westport, Mass., about 60 miles southwest of Boston, traffic crawls along Route 6 as drivers make their way to the nearby Atlantic beaches like Horseneck or Baker's. A 10-worker crew pouring and raking asphalt onto the road slows their progress. It's the kind of small annoyance drivers nationwide face each summer. It's also one small manifestation of President Barack Obama's ambitious strategy for jump-starting the economy.

In April, the P.J. Keating Co., a construction firm based in Lunenburg, Mass., bid on about a dozen stimulus projects funded through the U.S. Transportation Department. It won two contracts, including this $4.06 million job, rescuing what would have been a dismal year for P.J. Keating, says David Baker, 36, a manager of construction operations. As business dwindled over the past two years, the firm laid off about a dozen people. "We definitely would have been faced with another half-dozen layoffs had we not gotten these stimulus projects," Baker says. Instead, the company kept all its remaining 300 employees, and hired five new ones. Ordinarily, a few -government-funded jobs, like traffic on Route 6, wouldn't be noteworthy. But the tableau neatly encapsulates the promise—and pitfalls—of an economy at an inflection point.

Awesome time for everyone to start running up their credit cards again! \o/

So what lessons did we learn from this? I, for one, learned nothing to be honest, my quality of life improved greatly during these down times.

Good for Keating Co. What about the other companies who can't rely on pointless government contracts that provide work for the sake of work and are down because of the recession!

I suppose the Stimulus is just something there to lessen the blow, but still, what's the long term cost of it

Like mek, what about those of us who finished high school and aren't getting bullshit government contracts?  Our house is still worth less than we bought it for three years ago, I'd say little has changed.

Ya, I bet they did.

Considering America's infrastructure currently has an overall D grade, we've needed this for a long time. Our roads alone have a D+ grade, as in deficient and inadequate. Honestly, the fact that the stimulus money is helping keep people employed is merely a perk.

The majority of the highways and interstates that we depend on to move our food a goods were built in the 1940's and 1950's, with little to no maintenance since. The Minneapolis Bridge collapse was not an isolated incident, nor will it be the last unless we stop taking everything for granted.

Home sales were up again Nationally. .. 11%, that is the biggest jump in 8 years. Average prices are still low but I expect them to come up since the inventory is shrinking.

Government projects got us out of the Great Depression.

And yes, World War 2 was a government project.

Kids?  lol.  Anyway, they are just repaving for the most part.  That will be torn up and potholed by next spring.  WE ALREADY HAVE MONEY FOR ROAD PAVING.  Stimulus is not for road paving because the states have money for that.  Well, they did have money for it until they proved they couldn't spend and plan correctly.  So, since they couldn't find the money for paving now, what makes you think they will find it next year?

Some of that will stick.

I get the impression people have your guttering installed because it looks fancy and not that there is any real practical need for it.  Don't get me wrong it looks like quality stuff.

The quotes yesterday were for materials that ( make 9 those fancy castings ) to be shipped out.

Our products are as useful or more useful than regular guttering, which is practical as it protects wall, windows and foundations. I'd wager that most buildings where you live have gutters, thereby demonstrating a need for them. Though California is in the midst of a brutal drought it will rain and because of the nature of the soil, and the dumb way they build houses here you totally need gutters.

I work in the field, so I can tell you that it's possible to waste more money maintaining a hopeless case than it is to just grind and pave.

If you keep dinking around with roads that have this shit (and worse) all over them, it's all going to accumulate.

That doesn't mean that they all help.

Red Forman wrote:

Yup, but the local governments use it all for pet projects. I can't wait to see what extravagant thing Seattle wants to do next, and I'll laugh when it gets shot down by the state.

This is where quality becomes value.. in home improvements. Not only because they are built to last (avoiding replacement cost), but because they contribute directly to the value of the property. In fact, I think ATG should be marketing himself that way. "Protecting your home and it's value/etc".

The recession may be over, but the depression is looming...

By 2014, the looming liabilities of the US will be about 110% of GDP.(I twas an IMF chart, which I now can't find, but am looking for)

About 70% of US GDP is Consumer Spending, so 70% of GDP could theoretically evaporate almost instantly...

Which would be a very bad thing...

That stat does not include the looming issue of Nationalized Healthcare or more "Stimulus".
