I grew up with the odd smack, but wasn't a real brat so didn't cop a lot. Got the strap once at school tho.
Smacking was recently made illegal here, amid concerns of child abuse, nevermind that there were already laws in place against this...
I believe that a smack is fine. Obviously a kid shouldn't be smacked for every little thing they do wrong, but sometimes a kid just won't understand anything else.
Whatever the punishment is, it needs to establish/re-inforce a link between being the kid naughty, and bad things happening to them.

Time outs. Denial of pleasure and if all else fails a stout wooden spoon.
I'll vouch for that wooden spoon. Ma broke one over my ass. The belt? Check. I got beat every which way as a kid...including being choke slammed by pop right before we left for church lol. Def. need to beat your kids, I was a shit at home, but my parents always got compliments on how behaved me and sis were. I def see kids these days you know dont get beat. Man o man if i stepped outta line when we were in public...you better watch the fuck out in the car and when we get home.
I don't think I was ever 'beat' or 'spanked' or 'got the belt' as a kid and I've grown up a half-decent individual

Sometimes I will bare her ass and bent her over my knee and give her a sharp crack on the ass with the spoon.

check local statutes. Fl's is open palm (ie no belt rings) no marks after 20 min or it's classified as abuse.

Never got the soap in mouth. Got the belt like mother fucker till I was 12. Haven't gotten hit by my parents since then.
Broke spoon, soap in mouth once, only really got shit taken away from me and told off. I fucking hate getting told off.
As for "todays kids", depends on punishment. Wouldnt hit the kid, but telling, or at the brink of yelling for srs bsns and then take away joys and pleasures.
The corner works a charm for my uncle. Makes my cousin shut right the fuck up. My other cousin doesnt speak a word. Its weird like that....
