When I first saw the story I thought it was highly suspicious that 4 healthy people can't escape a car in 3-4 meters of water not to mention the location. The police finally identified the victims today. My next thought is honour killings? Am I wrong?

Police have released the names of three teenage sisters and their aunt found dead in a submerged vehicle Tuesday in a part of the Rideau Canal northeast of Kingston, Ont.

Kingston police have identified the victims as Zainab Shasia, 19, Sahar Shasia, 17, Geeti Shasia, 13, and Rona Amir Mohammed, 50. All were from Montreal.

Investigators were still unable to say what happened to the four victims, whose bodies were found Tuesday morning inside a four-door Nissan Sentra that was underwater at the northern most lock of Kingston Mills Locks.

Kingston police Const. Mike Menor said investigators are conducting tests on the car but told reporters it could be weeks before the results of autopsies being performed Thursday are released.

Mechanics also inspected the car to see whether it malfunctioned in any way.

“We’re still trying to ascertain the why, the why, the why,” Menor said. "We're waiting with bated breath here."

"This is a very emotional incident," Menor said, his voice breaking. "You know what bothers me is the fact that there's three sisters, and it bothers us."

John Bruce, a Parks Canada employee at the Kingston Mills Locks, found the car submerged in about three metres of water after noticing an oil plume.

"I saw some oil rising out of the water. And when I looked to see why the oil was coming up, I saw the outline of a car," he said.

Bruce assumed the car had been stolen and then ditched.
Travelled through poles

Staff Sgt. Chris Scott of the Kingston police speaks during a press conference Tuesday.Staff Sgt. Chris Scott of the Kingston police speaks during a press conference Tuesday. (CBC)The lockmaster from the Rideau Canal told investigators the locks were closed for the night and secured, said Staff Sgt. Chris Scott of the Kingston police.

The case has left police puzzled as to how the car left the road, travelled down a patch of grass — either over a concrete barrier or through a gate — and through two of the poles on the dock.

Scott added the women had earlier stopped in Kingston for the night.

"We pieced together that they did have a bit of a family vacation west of us on the other side of Toronto and were returning to Quebec," he said.

Meanwhile Thursday, Montreal police said they received a request from investigators in Kingston to locate a second vehicle in the city's north-end St-Leonard borough.

Montreal police spokesman Daniel Lacoursière would not say whether officers had found the vehicle. He also wouldn't confirm reports that the second vehicle might have been seen in Kingston with one of the victims.

The incident has left people in the Kingston area in shock. People have left flowers near the lock where the car was found.

For the car to end up on the lock they have to make a hard right turn to go through a locked gate. Gate was in place, locked and not damaged.
Or, hop a curb, drive across a grassed area, weave between some planters and bench's.
No skid marks or torn up areas on the grass, no damage to planters or bench's.
The Police do not think the car was out of control, nor can they tell at this time who was driving.

The irony is, that there is really nothing "honourable" about honour killings. These murders would be dissaproved of by anyone with a genuine sense of honour. This is just retarded tradition/superstition.

Honour killings? What, three in one go? Including a 13 year old? Including for some reason a 50 year old Aunt?

Don't you think it's pretty twisted to use the death of four people as a springboard for another weak attack on that religion. I'm no fan of Islam, I hate it and everything it stands for, and this does look suspicious, but really, come on...

I bet it goes like this, if it was a bunch of regular white dudes it's murder, if a bunch of black dudes it's a gang related incident. A bunch of Asians it's suicide because of exam failures (lol) and a bunch of Muslims either a failed suicide car bomb attempt or honour killings

Just another attempt to bash on a religion. Is it not unusual for a family of a particular race to all die accidentally and it not be some kind of religious suicide?

Punching out a window is one thing, but anybody whose done basic water survival ed will know that moving in water with clothes on is something else.  You can't jab underwater.  If you think I'm BSing, go for a swim in track pants and a T-shirt and than report back.

opening a door underwater always seems to be a problem because of the pressure. The thing thou if they where knocked out by the crash the kids would have to wait for the water to fill the entire car before being able to open the door, destroying a window is easy if you have a screwdriver but guess they didn't have those around.

I tried swimming with clothes, was in a swimming group for some activity during my years. Of course they tell us to swim about 100-200m, total 4 lanes with clothes, boy do you slow down like hell.

Also, it is extemely difficult to just wait for the pressure to equalize.  It takes time; if you panic, you burn up more oxygen, making it less likely that you will make it.  Keeping three kids relaxed and calm would be a serious challenge.  Also, if a window was open, the water would rush in pretty fast.  It will make the car fill up faster, but the pressure of the water knocking you around can keep you from holding your breath.  3 or 4 meters of water, family of four dying?  This seems like a very common event, not very noteworthy.

Actually they use like, guns and acid instead. Acid is used so that they can't get any other person to love them. All thou one girl who was attacked with acid was allowed to pour acid into one of the eyes on the guy who threw the acid. He begged her not to do it. :3 Doesn't seems to be that fun when you are on the receiving end you monster.

Here in Sweden they mostly use guns what I have read.
Also I honestly don't get how fucked up a community can get when they actually have to KILL their wife in order to save themselves from the bad honor they get.

The identity of the 3 arrested should be revealed tomorrow. If it turns out it is the father and their brothers, I wonder why they even left their home country. It certainly wasn't for a better life for the female members. I have no doubt it will be them because the story about 'joy riding' was so much BS.

Wherever you got the impression I was attacking Islam from anything I wrote in the OP or the title, you are wrong. I have nothing against Islam.
Honour killings are a cross-religious / cross-cultural phenomenon.

http://www.montrealgazette.com/arrests+ … story.html

The mystery surrounding the puzzling deaths of three sisters from St. Léonard and their relative – whose bodies were discovered in a car submerged in the Rideau Canal near Kingston last month – deepened Wednesday as police announced the status of their investigation has changed.

While neither the Kingston nor the Montreal police would confirm reports that three people were arrested yesterday on their way to Trudeau airport, neighbours who spoke to The Gazette said investigators from both police forces spent several hours at the victim’s St. Léonard home Tuesday night.

Kingston police are expected to make an announcement today about the status of the investigation.

“Everything will be explained then,” said Kingston police Const. Michael Menor.

Menor refused to provide any other details about the change in the investigation or comment on the reported arrests. While Kingston police have always referred to the deaths as suspicious, they initially described the case as a coroner’s investigation, leaving open the possibility the deaths were accidental.

That appears to have changed.

Roger Skinner, Regional Supervising Coroner for East Region, Kingston Office, would not comment on autopsies conducted on the bodies. He said he was unaware that Kingston police planned a news conference for today.

The bodies of the three sisters – Zainab Shafii, 19, Sahar Shafii, 17 and Geeti Shafii, 13 – and their relative Rona Amir Mohammed, 50, were discovered in the submerged car, near the Kingston Mills locks, on June 30.

Mohammed has been described in media reports as the sisters’ aunt. But the girls’ mother, Tooba Mohammad Yahya, told The Gazette Mohammed is her cousin. Kingston police have referred to Mohammed only as “a relative.”

This month, Yahya told The Gazette that she, her husband Mohammed Shafii, most of their seven children, and Mohammed were returning to Montreal after vacationing and visiting relatives in Niagara Falls. The family, travelling in two cars, stopped at a hotel late at night during the trip and, according to Yahya, her eldest daughter asked for the keys to their Nissan Altima. Yahya said she assumed her daughter wanted to practise driving and took the car without permission before it somehow ended up in the Rideau Canal.

The three sisters were all born in Kabul, Afghanistan. Their family moved to Dubai in the 1990s and to Canada two years ago.

No one answered the door at the Shafii home yesterday, and the blinds remained closed as journalists and camera crews gathered outside. A blue Pontiac minivan sat in the driveway outside the white duplex, but it was unclear whether it belonged to the Shafii family.

Neighbours said several vehicles from the Montreal police and police from Ontario spent a considerable amount of time at the victims’ home Tuesday night.

“(The police) were here for at least three hours. They arrived at 6 (p.m.) and must have left three hours later,” said Chantal Tremblay, who lives above the family in the duplex.

Another woman, who lives across the street, said she saw officers go into the house, then saw three men who had been inside emerge and wait on the lawn.

“It could have been the father and the brothers, I don’t know,” said the woman, who spoke on condition that her name not be used. “When the police cars drove away, the van in the driveway followed them. I don’t know who was in the van.”

Montreal police Constable Olivier Lapointe would only say that Kingston police are in charge of the investigation.

Well this is gonna show up on CSI or Law & Order in the near future.

The father, mother and one son were arrested on the way to the airport.

It turns out that the 'aunt' was actually his first wife, who was sterile. So he married the second one and she had 7 children.

The dead wife's sister (in France) sent an email to police (with a wedding photo) in which she says her sister and the eldest daughter feared for their lives.

So sad.

As mentioned, you can't open the door until the pressure evens out.

This is like me saying my account is overdrawn and it's the bankers fault.  Except, waitaminute, it is.

So yes, honor killings to be sure.
