BTW, it was quite deep so there was little to no damage and zero injuries. The radio and tv stations here mention it but move on to more important stories (like, "was MJ murdered or not?" or "Is this dog really psychic or not?") within a short space of time.
Yeah I felt the quake last night. It spilt my energy drink can which I'm a bit miffed about.
The first quake, the 7.8 one was quite deep, (12 km,) so I only felt the followup 6.1 one which was 5km deep. Earthquakes happen all the damn time here so it's nothing to be concerned about really, like TD mentioned even local news stations don't really care. In the Dominion Post newspaper this morning it amounted to a small square of a story which was about a Tsunami that never happened rather than an earthquake.
Also interesting fact, did you know that our national museum is designed so that it floats in case it breaks off due to an earthquake? I so want to be inside it when that happens.
