This is not an instance where the slippery slope accusations work to determine the sentence he will receive, in fact no instance is. In determining the worth of the life of a cat I don't think anything apart from animal cruelty laws will play a part. I know very little about them in Florida, but here in Canada they are very lax- he would serve less than 5 years.

I don't think its the killing part that needs to be noticed, its the motive behind it.
I've killed more deer/elk in my life than I can count, but it was for "sport" and for food.
I've had to put down my horse, but it broke both its hind legs 20 miles from a road, and I broke 3 ribs and an my forearm.
Gophers? they're pests..and its fun.
My dad had to put down my German Shepard, but it got bit by 3 different rattle snakes, at the time we lived 30 miles away from a Vet.
I've killed Frogs, with firecrackers, but there is 10 million more where they came from.
Rattlesnakes, Gardner Snakes, Bull Snakes..

I used to use frogs for target practice with my BB gun allllll the time...oddly, I never really felt bad at the time b/c there were so many of them - plus, I was like 8 to 10 years old.
However, I only ever killed a couple of birds and maybe 2 squirrels because it made me feel bad afterwards...so pretty soon I "grew out" of that phase.
It's not uncommon for kids growing up in the country to do stuff like that, and I don't feel like I'm a potential sociopath due to it. I've gone turkey hunting a couple of times in the past few years, and when I get one I eat it...but I have absolutely no desire to kill deer, varmints, or pretty much any animals.
What sets this kid apart is the fact that these were almost entirely peoples' pets, and not just random animals out in the wild. There's a lot more social stigma regarding off'ing someone's favorite dog/cat/whatever....

I love animals and would choose to save an animal over many of the pieces of shits on this earth. Not all or most though.
The kids obviously screwed in the head, but that said 158 years or whatever is a tad excessive.

I believe the actual quote is that 'a society can be measured on how it treats its prisoners.' Also, I think those 4 burglary charges may have boosted up the likely jail time. Also, that '158 years' is a grand total if he is found guilty on every charge is given the max sentance on every charge, and the judge sets those sentances to run consecutively and not concurantly. Point being if we allow sick fucks like this to get off easy, it shows we don't really give a shit if sick fucks do sick shit. I don't know about you but if I was the judge of that court I'd rather not give the impression that I condone animal abuse.

I fucking hate cats personally allergic to the little bastards. Anyway why exactly could he get 158 years for killing a bunch of cats? I mean the value of the cats life isn't worth much since a cat can't contribute anything to society except hunting mice and such. I could understand destroying people's property [the cats] but 158 years for killing cats seems extreme. Am I the only one who doesn't see the point in putting such high value on the life of an animal that can't even talk?

No, what I'm saying is that the figure of 158 was what the law could sentence him to if he were guilty on all counts and it was decided to give him the maximum sentence on all counts as well. The trial hasn't even started, and even if he is convicted, it is unlikely that he will face the maximum on every charge, and even if that is what he gets, it is more likely that the time will be concurrent, meaning that the time on each charge will be counted from the first day he is in jail (i.e. two 15 year sentences, you serve 15 years total and are released), rather than consecutive, meaning he would have to work off each charge independently, and most likely die in jail (i.e. sentenced to two 15 year charges, serve 30 years and are then released).AussieReaper wrote:
