Kinda funny that both AZ and IL are on the verge of shutting down when you think about it.

I am not quite sure...but aren't most states in trouble democratic run states. Michigan isn't far behind and is Democratically run as well.

Indiana is generally Republican (the House is slightly more Democratic).  Mississippi has a slightly Democratic legislature but a Republican Governor.

Who cares about Democratic or Republican run.  They are all losing their power to the federal government soon.  Neither one has been good for our country or their state.  We all need to get off this party issue and figure out if we want to put our money and liberty in the hands of politicians or not.

I agree... it's not about the party anymore...they are one in the same.
This is about a special class of elected elite that are out of control.
House and Senate live in the beltway bubble and all incumbents need to be voted out in 2010
and term limits established.

I'm all for term limits.  I also support term limits for Supreme Court Justices.  No one should be appointed for life.

How Politicians Bankrupted California
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articl … ornia.html
"As the end of California's fiscal year approaches, the Governor and state legislators confront a $24 billion deficit. While Republicans and Democrats wrangle over how to address the gaping shortfall, some members of the press have started to look for a scapegoat for the fiscal train wreck. Many have blamed the California taxpayer's only protection: Prop. 13, the 1978 measure capping state property taxes at 1% of a home's assessed value.

Perhaps the most egregious example of the finger-pointing is a recent piece from TIME's Kevin O'Leary, moaning that "Before Prop 13, in the 1950s and '60s, California was a liberal showcase." He insists that "at the root of California's misery lies Proposition 13," and concludes that "in California, the conservative legacy lives on."

How ridiculous. Of all the problems contributing to the fiscal mess, state under-taxation is the least of them. California's sales and gas taxes are the highest in the country - and it has the highest vehicle license fees and the second-highest top-bracket income tax, too. Its corporate tax rates are the highest of all Western states, and for the fourth year in a row, a survey of 543 CEO's found that California's toxic combination of high taxes and intrusive regulations made it the worst place in the nation to do business."

Blaming it on prop 13...lol..  undertaxed haha

and this is great from a reader.
"Noreen Evans has 12 full time staff members working for her. Why in the world does a State Rep need 12 staff members? She needs to do more work herself!!! Spending is out of control.'

Indiana passed their budget and will not be shutting down.  If they didn't pass it by midnight (tuesday) then some government offices were told not to report to work on wednesday, but it passed no shutdown.

Looks like in California they nearly doubled the Vehicle License Fee (VLF) from 0.65 percent to 1.15 percent...~$220 to $400/year (€157 to €286/year).

We seem to be doing okay here in Texas.  We don't even have a state income tax.

There's a 'tax commission' right now that's about to propose that California reformulate their tax structure to:

1) VAT tax
2) Reduce Income Tax from 9.55% to 6%, but make it 'flat'
3) Remove State Sales Tax
4) Add a 'Carbon Tax'

Right now if you make more than $47,000 (€33,627) you pay 9.55% income tax (or more, some counties go up to 10.55%)
We have a 9.25% Sales Tax  (or more, some counties go to 11%)

Additionally all services (Haircuts, Carwashes, etc...), will be taxed.

Obama already said that they were going to consider a VAT tax.  I don't like VAT taxes...it 'hides' taxes from the consumer.

"While promoting his new cap-and-trade energy-tax bill, which passed the House last week, President Barack Obama revealed in a White House address Monday his model for the nation’s economy — California.

“In the late 1970s, the state of California enacted tougher energy-efficiency policies,” Obama said, noting that the state and its residents use less energy today per capita than the national average. “Think about that: California producing jobs, their economy keeping pace with the rest of the country, and yet they’ve been able to maintain their energy usage in a much lower level than the rest of the country.”"

Obama said this week to use California for his model for nation’s economy... Seriously?

Instead of removing the sales tax, you could raise it, but lower the income tax and lower property taxes.

Basically, if you create a situation where people are better able to save their money and invest it in property, taxing consumption is the way to go.

Even a carbon tax isn't bad if you couple it with a decrease in income and property taxes.
