Ireland, the only nation in the EU to have been given the democratic right to deliver their verdict on the EU Lisbon treaty (and reject it), have wrapped up a special deal safeguarding areas of sovereignty perceived to have come under threat from the treaty in an attempt to get the Irish to pass it.

All other EU nations = Losers. Wahahahahaha.

After Cameron gets voted in over here, I expect there'll be a referendum which might well stop the whole thing dead in it's tracks. Brown is on borrowed time.

Problem is that if he doesn't get into office before Ireland vote on Lisbon it'll become legally binding for all EU nations, unless the Czech or Polish presidents refuse to sign.

And you don't expect there to be massive hold ups on a controversial treaty that has already been massively delayed?

I hardly think it inconceivable that, after seeing Ireland get a special deal, some other countries don't start fishing for better deals.

Your parliament and upper house have already passed it and the Irish deal is being passed off as a 'protocol', legally speaking, rather than a substantive change to the treaty itself. Unless one or other nation is given a democratic choice this thing looks like being railroaded into action.

Why the fuck is Ireland even a member of the EU.  Ireland has more in common with the US.  Just become the 51st state if you want to belong to a fucked up enity.

The more you centralize power, the more easily it can be abused.

Admittedly, you can use us for somewhat of an example of that.

Considering some of the truly ridiculous laws that tried to get passed as being part of the EU i.e. what shape a banana must be (I shit you not), there are good reasons.

Until know i have seen positive bumps and negative bumps. But some people are dead set on focusing only on the negative bumps.

+ fresh Guinness. As opposed to the shit we get here. Still want to get to that pub in Perth that airfreights it over and refuses to sell any Guinness from barrels that aren't opened within two weeks of arriving in Aus.

Somebody want to explain exactly what the Lisbon Treaty is? A quick summary would be nice.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

Don't doit..lol. The reason I admire Ireland is because they are attempting to protect their sovereignty.

That's probably because the negative bumps are a lot more significant than the positive ones.
