I think the next 24 hours are going to be extremely interesting.
why
Because the supreme leader has made it clear that this is over. There is a ban on protesting and he has said that he will not be responsible for the bloodshed if the mass protest continue (after he blamed "the outside world" for the divisiveness). The opposition said they are continuing despite. There is another rally scheduled for today.. it's a direct challenge to his authority.

Yup. It could be colorful, as in the color red.

I think there is a 50-50 chance Iran will descend into total chaos.

If there is much evidence that we played a hand in it there is also good odds that we will be sucked into a war.

I think that between Iran and NK's plan to launch a missile towards Hawaii we stand a 50-50 chance of a big shit sandwich in the next two weeks.

Lets hope calmer heads prevail and there are no " incidents " similar to the Gulf of Tonkin.

We aren't going to do anything with the NK boat me thinks. In fact the UN hasn't authorized anyone to board them if they say no. I think this is just so we can go back to the UN and say "see, we tried".

Iran.. I honestly don't know.

Video seems to be stamped today.

It could be old footage.

I saw that. I noticed CNN gave Larry King and AC off friday night. This is because they are on tonight to cover the defiance. They are trying to avoid the curfuckle they had last weekend. Running reruns instead of covering it/talking about it. I didn't know that their cutback had such far reaching effects.. really noticeable on most weekends.

Caption:The Revolution is started

As I write this, Iranian twitterers are reporting use of water cannons, teargas, gunshots, and even some sort of burning agent being dropped on the crowds by helicopters. There’s still no confirmation as far as I know that a bomb really did go off at Khomeini’s shrine, but Reuters is now reporting that Mousavi supporters have set fire to a building being used by Ahmadinejad supporters. And now, suddenly, Mousavi is making some sort of statement where he says he’s prepared for martyrdom. Sounds like the gloves are finally all the way off.
THIS IS DEDICATION! @1:00 .. after one of them is shot they pick him up and immediately resume.

Anecdotally, after following them all week, I can tell you that the tone of Iranian twitterers is strikingly different from what it’s been before. Some are openly asking people to pray for them. The fear is palpable.

Here’s a poignant video in Farsi with English subtitles that’s making the rounds today. The din you hear in the background is Tehranians screaming “Allahu Akbar” in defiance of Khamenei last night.

Update (AP): A comparatively calm but significant new clip: According to NIAC, protesters can be heard chanting “Marg bar Khamenei,” i.e. “Death to Khamanei.” It’s not about Ahmadinejad anymore.

Basij Hunting in Iran

By the way, two nights ago I went out to see a few things ... as the general crowds spread into their homes militia style Mousavi supporters were out on the streets 'Basiji hunting'.

Their resolve is no less than these thugs -- they after hunting them down. They use their phones, their childhood friends, their intimate knowledge of their districts and neighbours to plan their attacks -- they're organised and they're supported by their community so they have little fear. They create the havoc they're after, ambush the thugs, use their Cocktail Molotovs, disperse and re-assemble elsewhere and then start again - and the door of every house is open to them as safe harbour -- they're community-connected.

The Basiji's are not.

These are not the students in the dorms, they're the street young -- they know the ways better than most thugs - and these young, a surprising number of them girls, are becoming more agile in their ways as each night passes on.

Also, with $10K every local police station lock can be broken and guns taken out...the police too are crowd friendly...for sure put a gun in their hands and these young become a serious counter-balance to the Basij...call them 10% of 18-22 year olds - that makes circa 10 million around the country versus max 4 million Basijis.

interesting commentary on that page..
http://www.thewashingtonnote.com/archiv … ent-132548
Considering political activity and a desire for freedom (of expression, personal behavior, and association) as systems, it is obvious that this Iranian Revolution is showing us a new model of "freedom fighting." This model uses technology as tools for communication and planning, in ways that cannot be foreseen by higher powers. I would lay even money that young Iranians are using their Warcraft and Second Life avatars, to meet and plan real-world events in cyberspace.

Even more important is that this Revolution is non-violent in nature. If Khamenei uses bullets and the Basiji to attempt to crush this, there will be blood shed, but it will be the end for him. He will fall like Gordon at Khartoum. The sight of millions of people marching peacefully for democracy is an image that will resonate throughout the peace-loving peoples of the world, those who are seeking freedom without wanting to have to kill to get it. This is the "New Model Army" that humans have evolved.

Those political systems that rely on top-down pressures to keep the "masses" trapped are going to find that the Iranian methods are utilized more and more. Today it is Facebook and Twitter - tomorrow there will be new technologies used, that have been designed to elude the pursuers. Think of the myriad technological forms that file-sharing has taken over the past ten years; that progression is proof that technological intelligence, applied to a goal, eventually and always defeats the strictures that others attempt to place on it.

Steve, what is the effect of this Second Iranian Revolution going to be on Iraq's internal politics?

Update (AP): Another murder in Tehran. Skip ahead to 3:25 to see the latest victim of Iran’s “robust debate,” or watch from the beginning and you’ll find protesters picking up rocks and chanting “Marg bar dictator.”

Update (AP): Multiple reports on Twitter now that people are shouting from the rooftops — literally — at Khamenei and the regime.

Update (AP): Verrry interesting: Rooftop shouts now being heard in Mashad, the Shiites’ second holiest city. Proof that the clerics are coming around to the people’s side?
reports flooding in massive rebellion in Mashad, city alive with screams of Allah Akbar. Mullahs hand in hand with ppl.

From a few days ago, but still an interesting development
http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/t … sents.html
Grand Ayatollah Sanei in Iran has declared Ahmadinejad's presidency illegitimate and cooperating with his government against Islam. There are strong rumors that his house and office are surrounded by the police and his website is filtered. He had previously issued a fatwa, against rigging of the elections in any form or shape, calling it a mortal sin.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yousef_Sanei

On nuclear weapons and WMDs

In an interview with The San Francisco Chronicle, Grand Ayatollah Yousef Sanei said:

"There is complete consensus on this issue. It is self-evident in Islam that it is prohibited to have nuclear bombs. It is eternal law, because the basic function of these weapons is to kill innocent people. This cannot be reversed.".

Ayatollah Yousef Sanei said clerical authorities have quietly expressed opposition to the development of weapons of mass destruction for many years, and he described it as the reason that Iran never retaliated with chemical weapons when Saddam Hussein used them to kill Iranian troops and Iran-backed Kurds during the 1980- 88 Iran-Iraq war. "You cannot deliberately kill innocent people," he said.

On the status of women

He has declared that women have equal status in Islam, and they qualify for being a Judge (Qazi), Head of State, or even a Marja.

On non-Muslims

His view about non-Muslims (if they obey a holy religion) is that they are not najis and they equally deserve to go to Paradise if they follow their religion sincerely.
Note that a "Marja" is an Ayatollah/Grand Ayatollah.

It really seems as though there are some real fractures in the Iranian ruling coalition that have existed since the Islamic Revolution, but have been papered over in the face of external pressures ("The West", Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Israel, the Soviets, etc.). Absent those forces it doesn't seem as though the religious authorities who were initially in favor of a more democratic Iran are willing to "play the game" as it were.

And it has descended into chaos. I pray for the Iranian people to resolve this peacefully and quickly... and I hope that the theocracy comes crashing down, and in its place a democracy is formed.
