I tried to run TF2 on my laptop, and the performance was awful. I have a decent build for a laptop:

- Intel Duo T9550, 2.67 GHz
- 6 gig RAM (I know)
- ATI Radeon HD 3670
- Vista SP1

Sounds like others with similar cards were reporting running games on all medium with no issues. I have settings on all low and the resolution at 1360x876(? - whatever that 16:9 is), and I get about 40 FPS with the setting on all low on a server by myself. Online, with rockets flying etc I get about 20 FPS from a distance. With that stuff rendering in my face, I get about 10 FPS. A pyro decides to have a flamethrower in my face? I don't even see flames, it skips from the first frame to my deathcam shot. I'd assume around 5 FPS, but the monitor doesn't even give me a number. It's a fairly consistent 9-10 in combat situations.

I just updated my driver (vista, 64bit), so I'm guessing it's not that. I also tried it before updating drivers, so rolling back won't help. Multicore support is unchecked (causes lag in valve games), so it's not that either. I'm fairly out of ideas.

I do run EVE online with few issues, but it's not in exactly graphically stressful situations. I don't think it's running at optimum either (it should be smoother), so I don't think it's a TF2 issue. I'm about to download another non-valve game (assassin's creed) just to try and see what kind of results I'd get, but I'd rather not download 12 gig just to check my FPS.

I just tried CS:S and thought it would be the same as TF2, but it isn't. I can run reccomended (most @ high) without issues. Anyone ideas of what's up? How can CS:S run well on all high and TF2 run poorly on all low?

Reinstall TF2?

That would be logical, ergo I didn't think of it.

TF2 is an updated version of the engine.
Just like Left 4 Dead is an updated version of the TF2 engine.
Your best bet is to play it on low with the lowest resolution possible if you actually want to play the game.
Your laptops specs are good but the GPU isn't really for gaming.

Like I said in the OP, it was the lowest resolution with lowest possible specs and I was getting 5 FPS in combat heavy play.

There is no reason that CS:S would run on all high and be fluid while TF2 would be all low and choppy.

I have experienced this first hand dude. I have a 6600GT and I can play counter strike decently but not TF2.

I'm not seeing it. Yeah, I can see TF2 needing more processing power, but not THAT much more. TF2 is ugly as sin and looks akin to an airbrushing in paint and STILL not running well?

It's unplayable at the lowest specs. That just doesn't fit.

i'll agree TF2 isn't the best looking game, but it's 2 years old AND it was done in it's own style.  it's not incredible but it's not "ugly as sin" either.  CSS is 5 years old i think.  anything can run it fine.

fine, it looks like shit.  whatever.  the point is, you can't run it, and that's a fact.  it's not because of something wrong with your computer, the game, or the universe, it's just a more demanding game.

That laptop should be fine with TF2. Have you updated all your drivers?
I realize it's a demanding game, but it really can't be that much more. CS:S on all high has to draw so much more detail than TF2 on all low.

Neg. It doesn't feel like connection lag, but I suppose I won't rule it out. I just finished re-installing, i'll plug in an ethernet cable and let you know.

Just tried again with the fresh install and wired connection, still 10 FPS max during combat situations.

Have you tried the obvious things, such as close running programs, clean registry, defrag, antivirus sweep?
Antivirus and backround processes are a check.

I haven't cleaned registry, but I don't think I'll reinstall TF2 yet another time tonight. Maybe tomorrow if I CBA.

Don't think I've run a defrag in a while, probably due for that. Will checkdisc and defrag on bootup in the morning.

Edit: Which game would you call comparable to TF2 in terms of spec intensive?

I have...

COD4
HL2
Fallout 3
E:TW
Assassin's Creed
L4D
Portal

That way we can try to rule out the laptop (or TF2) as the source.

cod 4 is a little above.  hl2 is under.  fallout 3 is definitely above.  dunno about e:tw.  assassin's creed is between cod 4 and fallout 3, or maybe even around fallout 3.  l4d is right about where cod 4 is.  portal is a little above hl2, but still under tf2.

L4D just finished downloading.

I forget the console command for showing the FPS counter, but I'd say I didn't drop below 20 FPS with zombies raging in my face. Used recommended settings, mostly medium all around. Was online/ co-op campaign.

Looked much better and played much much smoother than tf2.

Ideas?

That would be the obvious one yeah, but I love that game. There's gotta be a fix.

edit: note to self, net_graph 1

ed: Also tried to enable multicore, no luck.

cl_showfps 1 (actually cl_showfps 2 is better)

Yeah I use net_graph 1, it shows the FPS, ping, among other things. L4D very rarely dropped below 20 while still looking superb. Do you play tf2 haffey? I'll get a screenshot of my video settings in case I'm just a tard and have one setting completely wrong.

TF2 is one of the heaviest Source engine based games. Especially for HD 3xxx cards. CS: Source is like walk in the park compared to it.

Have you tried running in direct x 8 / 8.1?

Right click on TF2 in the steam games list. Go to properties, set launch options. Type "dxlevel 81" minus the quotes. After you launch TF2 once quit and remove it. It will remember the command but if you don't it will reset your video settings at every launch.
