Win XP Pro SP3 all updated
P4 3.00GHz
ASUS PDS8000-x
Corsair 2GB Ram

I was at my buddy's place last night, showing him how to do some things on his PC, watching the 10pm news. As soon as the news started he said I haven't even seen what happened (previous day we had major storms knocking out power to 140,000 homes), and the power went out.

Booted PC and every time he enters password and hits enter the screen freezes. Tried to log in to second account same thing. Tried F8 to get into safe mode, no dice... it only asks what drive to boot from ( CD, HD, or floppy).

Can anyone please help point me in the net direction to try a solution? Thanks in advance!!

What kind of safe mode doesn't give the option to go into safe mode? Odd. Turn off the PC via the button on the case. Next time you turn the PC on you should get the "PC wasn't turned off properly" message and the option to go into safe mode.

Sounds like F8 is the boot option menu. Try F9 or something.

There is.

I think the F keys vary on a lot of boards. I think F12, for me, gives me the screen to get into the Safe Mode choice.

The key to boot into safe mode does not vary by board. It is an OS command and not related to what board you have. It is always F8.

Are you sure about this? I'm almost certain i had to use F7 to go into safe mode on a NF2 mobo. (I always had XP)

Yes.

How could you even think it has anything to do with the mobo? Why would it? Safe mode is part of the OS. The mobo controls firmware driven stuff, like entering BIOS, boot menus, RAID - that kind of thing.

Think about it logically. Why would it have anything to do with the mobo?

go into 'safe mode with networking'
while your computer is booting up, BEFORE it gets to the windows loading screen, hit f7 or f8 (it may be another f key, try others if these don't work) and you should get a text menu giving you various startup options. you will boot into windows in safe mode. adjust your display so you can see what's going on (your display drivers won't be loaded so windows will go with generic) and then run malware bytes. it needs to be in safe mode so that malware that's set to start with the system won't be loaded and will be able to be removed.
It's always a good idea to be in safe mode when trying to remove a virus/spyware because it can help stop the virus from loading, as only the bare minimum required processes are started. You can boot into safe mode usually by pressing F8 during the boot sequence, but sometimes it varies depending on your motherboard. It's always F-something though. Other common ones are F2 or F10.

But seriously I'm pretty sure I used either F6 or F7 to go into safe mode

Lol at that source.

I'm going with wiki and bert with this one ; AFAIK its always F8 or something something funky is done.

Raid setups etc. vary from different F key depending on mobo.

No, mine's F12.  I know because it's on a sticky note that I wrote next to the comp, along with Del for BIOS.

No it isn't.

The only way it could be is if you had a special custom version of Windows or are running some other different OS. It is OS bound and nothing to do with hardware.

To use a Safe Boot option, follow these steps:

   1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.
   2. Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
   3. When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.
F8 Key. 'Nuff said.

DOES NO ONE HAVE ANY COMMON SENSE! (except Panzer)

It's software. It's a command handled by the OS. The mobo can't handle it. That's NOT how bootstrapping works.

Well... *sigh*
after many days and attempts, finally got into safe mode via F8
Booted inta safe mode in 2nd account (non-admin account)
Ran chkdsk, all good> Restarted YAAHOO!!!
Loaded normally into 2nd account again. All good> restarted to test again , and was going to log in to main account.

C:/win/system32/config.sys (paratyping)
Corrupted system folder
run "r" for repair
/facepalm

Booted from CD, Win XP Pro disk.
"Windows cannot detect any hard drive on your system." Press F3 to restart   F>F>S

So now waiting for him to bring over a few floppy drives so i can reload the Raid driver...Im guessing thats the first hurdle to jump over then attempt the repair, again
