I do find it funny how the american govt doesn't know how to deal with computer crimes.
I dont know the exact numbers but "hacking" across state lines gets you jail time along the lines of murder.

all you guys saying the hacker should get a medal and should be praised coz he let them see securtiy thoughts, u might concern that he could be an ethical hacker and get paid by the US to help expose security flaws and fix them.

Hackers are as dangerous as terrorists, once there were 2 teenage hackers hacked into lockheed martin and was paid by a terrorist. Or hackers can steal nuclear secrets to terrorists... so i say they are as dangerous.

but i think that 70 yrs in guantanamo is WAY overkill, just give him 20 MAX

You have missed the point. The UnOriginalNhutta (that is your name right?) and I do think he needs to go to jail. Very much in my opinion as a crime is a crime. I believe a four-eight year scentence in a UK jail would do though. As you said Gitmo is overkill...

Doesn't it concern YOU that the most powerful nation in the world can get hacked like this? How many terrorists have hacked their networks that we DON'T know about? This hacker was a gentle slap in the face... Aren't we all glad that this guy was caught and the US governments security was upgraded as a result, instead of some psychotic terrorist getting the skills to hack it and launching some rather nasty warheads to every western power currently messing with the Middle East...

My personal opinion on this matter is quite clear, he should be locked up as breaking and entering is WRONG. He shouldn't be locked up for seventy years and blamed for things they cannot prove he did. He should NOT be rewarded for doing the wrong thing, I personally never said that.

However, very few hackers have CRIMINAL INTENT. Few hackers want to kill people. They do it for the kicks (0MG I 4M 1337 PWNAG3!!!1one) and for the money (I'll keep these military secrets secret if you give me 250 million bucks a year!)

I'd love to see that one fly if he was tried in the US. It would set an precedence that could allow any upstart company to just sit around and wait, and sue the first intruder who happens to stop by for damages equivalent to what it'd cost them to get security on their network.

If you build a fence around your property, you can't sue for damages to your fence if someone walks through a hole that you left in it.

Please do not reply to any posts above this one, as they are 3 years old.

Just a massive bump here but turns out this guy has lost his appeal against extradition and the Judicial review taking place at the moment is his last chance to avoid being extradited and charged in the USA under their terrorism laws.

So, have opinions on this topic changed in 3 years?

And where did the US say he would go to GITMO?

All I saw was a "bumbling nerd" who'd been caught and whose extradition was being requested saying he was worried he'd go to GITMO under some anti-terror laws. This being the same "bumbling nerd" whose stated goal for his hacking was to determine the truth about aliens or some such nonsense. And he's naive enough to think that kind of info would be on publicly-available networks.

Yeah. Pretty serious issue here.

And where are people getting "70 years in Cuba"? The article in the first post of the linked forum said nothing about length of sentence (proposed or otherwise), nor about location of detention (proposed or otherwise).

3 years ago FEOS. There was rumours floating around he'd end up in Gitmo on terrorist charges.

I see the post you just made.

Sorry. It's early here and my Red Bull hasn't kicked in.

He should have been tried in the UK, he'd already be serving out his sentence.

In a fair world it would be Microsoft facing charges for leaving the door open in the first place.
good point I agree, this is a bad move sending him to jail or to even Guantanamo bay... hope he gets like 5 years or less.

A lot of the time these hackers get given jobs to find holes in security and help patch them.

It's like hiring a bank robber to help secure your bank, and is actually a smart move.
