The chief constable has asked the Police Ombudsman to investigate claims that his officers stood by and did not intervene as Kevin McDaid was attacked.

This happened in Coleraine. 20mins from my house. Rangers (loyalist football team) Narrowly won the Scottish league title ahead of Celtic(nationalist football team) on Sunday. Now most people celebrate their team winning the title by downing a few pints. Not in Coleraine. A mob of about 40 people decided the best way to celebrate would be to get tooled up with weapons and go up into the Heights area and find a Catholic to Lynch. Unfortunately the murdered man was a community worker who was known to all sides of the community for his work trying to bring both communities together. He was set upon and beaten to death. He wife was heavily beaten along with various other people who tried to save the man, including a pregnant woman.
I have some insider information and was told a 15 year old boy was seen climbing onto a fence so he could jump onto his head from a great distance. There are also reports that the police sat in their car and watched the man die in his wife's arms.

A mob of 40 heavily armed people spent 30-40mins rampaging through an estate in Coleraine before they kicked a man to death and not a police in sight. How?
There is another man in hospital who was also beaten who is not expected to live. This is the worrying bit. He is from a notorious hatchet wielding Traveler family. About 100 of them come and stay in my town for an annual horse fair. They have a "King of the Gypsies" type bare knuckle boxing competition every year. The cops and locals know to stay away while they are here. Think the gypsies from the film Snatch and your half way there, they are even more nasty. Well if this guy from this family dies I have been told their will be war. This in my opinion has the potential to spark things off again. When the tit for tat starts its hard to stop the cycle.
This Friday a Loyalist paramilitary style parade is due to march right past the street this man was murdered. This parade will have banners glorifying the organisation these murders belong too. They where shouting "UDA" as they jumped on this guys head. They will be playing songs about killing catholics and it is guaranteed to cause a riot and possibly more blood shed. The organisers of this, so call "cultural event" have been quite so far so they are happy to let it go ahead through an area brimming with anger and tension. Friday could be the re-ignition of our Bad old Days.
