Out of nowhere, the BF2 on my Vista partition starts fucking up. When I'm above ground (whether it's parachuting or flying a helo or plane) and about 10m or higher, the ground starts flashing all these black spots. They're constantly moving around and something is obviously wrong with the textures.

I already reinstalled BF2.
I already updated my graphics drivers.

Problem still persists. I don't know what else to do. Help please?

Here are some screenshots:

Sounds like a borked GPU, artifacting away.

Able to check the temps on your card?

According to ATi Catalyst Control Center, temp is 67 'C, and that's after a few hours of playing.

I really don't think the GPU is borked though. Everything runs fine on my XP installation. And everything was running fine on my Vista installation up until the other day. And the problems were there right when I started, before the card could get overheated.

Download Atitool and run the artifact scan for a while.

I had exactly the same problem on my BF2 when I got my new ATI card.
All I did to fix mine was change a graphic setting (think any of them will do) join a server and make you let it fully load and change/load the texture settings fully. You can then change the settings back to want you want...
Worked perfectly on mine with exactly the same issue.

The only time this has happened to me is when i changed the name of the BF2.exe, changed it back and all black spots were gone.

I got a karma for my previous post in this tread, saying thank you, with no name. So I'm presuming that my suggestion solved the problem?...

I haven't tried any of the suggestions yet (haven't booted up my Vista partition), but I appreciated the effort and response
I'll update this thread if I get it fixed and post what I did to fix it.

Update your gfx drivers.

I had the same *error* before and updating card drivers fixed the problem

If there is no update for your card, disable dynamic lighting

Yeah if I remember correctly now this can cause the problem for some people, also another solution I remember reading about was to turn off catalyst AI, I did this and changed my settings as I suggested earlier and the problem went, however it's now on again and I have no problems so...

This is really annoying because I didn't even update my graphics card drivers until I had this problem, figuring it would solve it.

Fortunately (or not?) my Catalyst AI was already disabled because of issues it was having with other games

Anyways, I'm on Vista now and have some time, so hopefully I'll get around to these suggestions.

Ok, did another driver update just to be sure. Didn't work.
Ran ATiTool to scan for artifacts and it didn't find anything.
Loaded a game with all settings on low and AA turned off and... no more spots!
Then I changed the settings back to the way they used to be (all on high, full AA) and... the spots returned

It's pissing me off that this problem occurred so suddenly and the only fix is to play with crappy settings

did you upgrade from xp to vista?
or did u reformat and clean vista install?
the black spots look like bad drivers or overheating
can you take off the side panel of your comp and have a fan blow directly in there?
and also use a can of compressed air and blow out any dust bunnies...

I've had this installation of Vista for a few months now (along with an XP installation that I've had for a while). I don't get this problem when I play it on XP, and this problem randomly showed up the other day for my Vista install.

Even when I start up the game before the card has a chance to heat up, I get these problems. And I'd be sure that it was drivers problems, only thing is, these spots showed up without me installing any sorts of drivers.

I'll keep trying and maybe a miracle will happen. If not, guess I'll have to play on low.

have you played in xp compatibility mode when playing in vista?
the screenshots are weird because it's only small black spots...
just read a post where someone enabled the Catalyst AI center and it fixed it?
http://www.realitymod.com/forum/f27-pr- … rrain.html

and another thing... do you have your OS graphics set to game preference... ?
that helps with XP... not sure about vista?

Yeah the screenshots are bad, you really have to see it in motion. It's just dozens of dots flashing around at different places.

I'll try enabling Catalyst AI and see what it does. (Annoyingly, I need it turned off when I wanna play Crysis Warhead, so I'll be switching back and forth )

Hmph. Well, problem is solved. Enabling Catalyst AI fixed it.

Thanks Catbox, and everyone else who offered suggestions
