Governments make tax money on oil and gasoline.
With the air-powered car in my link above there could be billions in lost tax revenue.

I honestly think that we are still using oil because it is a cash cow for both the oil producers and the governments who get paid everything a gallon is sold.

I dont advise you to buy a smartcar lol. However you shouldnt buy that fuel thirsty monsters too. Global warming has reached to serious levels, you may not care but that is the  fact. And like OP said, fuel resources arent infinite.

It really doesnt make sense to drive SUV on pure tarmac road.

Reputated automobile manufacturers really care for safety in their average sized cars. Read the link below btw.

Bigger cars just "pretend" to be safer :

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m … _98469838/

"The argument that lowering the weight of cars to achieve high fuel economy has resulted in excess deaths is unfounded," says Tom Wenzel of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, coauthor of the report with physicist Marc Ross of the University of Michigan. "Safety is a challenging concept. It includes the design of the car itself, driver demographics and behavior, the kinds of roads, the time of day--a whole host of factors." While highway safety is complex, one thing is clear: A safety-conscious driver need not purchase a vehicle by the pound.--R.M.

They are wising up now. Currently they seem to be chasing patents in alternative energies like crazy so they can turn those into nice cash cows.

Concerning domestic fuel sales, if governments can't tax those then they will simply tax something else - maybe through an increase in income tax, or sales tax.  In some cases, they won't have to; less money spent on fuel means more money spent on other stuff - all of which attracts tax revenue in one way or another.

The only governments which have something to lose by the loss of oil sales are those governments which gain royalty payments and from the extraction of oil.

I have grave concerns over the fact that the companies buying most of the patents to new fuel technologies are the same ones that lobbied hardest for the same technologies to be run into the ground.

If you look at the facts you may realise that is a pretty stupid statement.

Firstly a 64 Impala weighs about 3460 pounds (1569 kgs).
The modern small family car ( lets compare apples with apples) say a VW Golf weighs 2932 lb (1330 kg). So we are only talking about 200 kgs difference. Not really a great deal these days. Basically a Golf with 3 passengers on board is the same as the Impala. Factor in the Golfs 6 airbags, seat belts. Higher strength steel, crumple zones etc, and the conclusion should be that the golf ( or modern equivalent) would be a better car to crash in any day of the week. Since the Golf handles better than a heavier car, you can avoid accidents better too.

This fuel economy thing is good. I cant see any negatives regarding it.

More Americans are killed and maimed each year as a result of CAFE standards than the number of soldiers that have died in Iraq each year.

Are people unimportant???

CAFE standards were designed to reduce US dependence on foreign oil, at the time we imported 20% of our oil,and now we import 60%, so this has not had the desired effect.

Increased fuel efficiency has allowed people to drive more, leading to more Greenhouse Gas emissions.

The weight reduction measure taken to increase fuel economy kill many, while not making a significant impact on the environment, as cars and light trucks are responsible for only 1.5% of human made gas emissions.

40% of the energy to your outlet is wasted in as its transmitted to your house.  50% of the energy in the United States is from Coal.

I don't know if you count the fact that electric vehicles' batteries affects on the environment (i.e. caustic materials like "lead-acid batteries" or "lithium-thionyl chloride" cells).

If you could generate electricity at your home, say from solar panels, then this would be worth it.

Honestly Hydrogen-fuel celled vehicles would had been best, but Obama killed funding for that.
