The trial of a pregnant Briton who could face death by firing squad if she is convicted of drug smuggling is to take place tomorrow, according to a legal charity.

Samantha Orobator was arrested at Wattay Airport in Laos in August last year after she was allegedly caught with 680g of heroin. In Laos, smuggling more than 500g carries a mandatory death sentence.

Reprieve lawyer Anna Morris flew into the country today fearing the trial would start before they were allowed to meet on Tuesday.

According to the charity, Orobator was able to make contact with their office in London today and said she had been told the trial would start tomorrow morning.

Reprieve said the Laotian authorities brought the trial forward in an apparent attempt to stop lawyers from intervening. Up until now the 20-year-old from south London has had no legal representation.

Speaking from Laos, Morris said she would meet with British consular officials tomorrow.

She said she understood the system in Laos was that defendants were only able to see lawyers a week before their trials or, in some cases, on the same day trials began.

She told Sky News: "That has been our concern from the outset, that she has had no access to legal counsel before this week.

I dont mind as well that idiots put whatever they want in their bodies, but chain of horror doesnt end there. It also influences their family members, children etc. Not that they just ruin their life but also life of others.

Interesting it somehow is, although I think its pretty normal in Laos.

After so many high profile cases and executions, I'm still amazed that people think it's somehow safe to smuggle drugs through South-east asia. do they really think the authorities are that incompetent? Because they certainly aren't lenient (not that that's an entirely bad thing)

How is a violation of Laos' laws not Laos' business? She hasn't been accused of violating any UK crimes, has she?

The Laotian government should at least allow her to give birth and turn the child over to her family before they carry out any sentence (death or otherwise). One would think that the UK would pressure Laos to at least submit the case (after sentencing) to international scrutiny to ensure that the evidence met accepted criteria for authenticity. If it does, it sucks to be her...but stupid decisions can have significant consequences.

You guys always say that you should respect the laws of other countries, and follow them by the book, why should this case be any different? Fair enough they may be stupid laws, but she broke them and I'm sure she was aware of them.

Of course, it's bullshit that they are trying to intervine and stop her from seeing a lawyer. I hope the UK puts pressure on Laos and she is allowed to see a legal representative and the trial only begins after she has had the baby. As FEOS says, the evidence should be subject to international scrutiny in order to prove that there was no foul play.

We've got a lawyer on the way to her atm. It could be that she's innocent (i personally don't think so) and the uk gov. will exercise as much power as possible to get a fair trial.

It's fucking Laos dude. Can't always trust the custom officials there. There were a lot of people fucked over by their customs, who smuggled drugs into their luggages when they didn't pay their bribes.

I'd highly doubt a British woman would spend money on airfair to travel to Laos and bring the drug into the UK. Think about it, why would a woman from England do such a thing... Drug mules aren't your usual white kids (unless from Eastern Europe).

As I said again, it's fucking SE Asia, customs fuck over people this way if they don't pay them an extra small fee. It's not like she's smuggling drugs out of the US or some shit. and 640g of heroin... Any person with half a brain knows you can't just put taht shit in the luggage.

Going on a high trip doesn't mean you want to bring back 640 grams of heroin back. Do you even know how much 640 grams of pure heroin is worth? That's a shitload of money and I doubt she would even have the moeny to buy that much in the first place.
