Genghis and Alex, from the ancient to middle ages era, yes there were plenty of other Empires around the world but these two did alot of Empire building on their own, as opposed to the Roman/Persian/Indian/Chinese Empires of the era which were of comparible size, also Genghis and Alex managed to spread into very different cultures. Genghis and his Mongolians made such an impact on the world that the landscape and populations were changed massively. Seriously some of the impacts on the world that the Mongols had is insane, and so much of it down to just one man. Alex didn't make as much of an impact with his Macca Empire

Middle-Ages to Industrial era is always a hazy area for me so I'm not quite sure, someone help me out here and name some famous names from that era to help me out. Napoleon might fit into this category. Yeah, I think he does, also Horatio Nelson

Modern-ish era. Rommel, Monty, the Soviet guys responsible for what the USSR did, hell everyone in WW2 at some point or another. Patton


If I really had to choose, it really would be between Alex and Genghis

Lol why are people saying Leonidas? He lead a combined force of 7300 to hold a pass about 100ft wide against 70k soldiers or so, very good but he still lost.

Tbh you really can't name just 5, military tactics changed so much over time. But if we are going to:

Philip II of Macedon - changed Greek combat, using Sarissa rather than just spears, a larger focus on cavalry combat;  which gave Alexander the Great the army he had.
Napoleon - just a bit of a military genius.
Rommel - first to really understand tank warfare.
Sabotai - Conquered Russia and half of eastern europe would have gone further if Ogadai hadn't died.
