WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A 22-month-old child from Mexico who was taken to Houston, Texas, for medical treatment is the first confirmed U.S. fatality from swine flu, health authorities said Wednesday.

The toddler was not a U.S. citizen, said Kathy Barton, a spokeswoman for the Houston Department of Health and Human Services, adding she could provide no other details.

At a news conference unrelated to the health issue, President Obama said, "My thoughts and prayers and deepest condolences go out to the family as well as [to] those who are ill and recovering from this flu."

Obama said, "This is obviously a serious situation -- serious enough to take the utmost precautions."

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and newly confirmed Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius are closely monitoring the swine flu outbreak, Obama said. Learn more about swine flu and how to treat it »

The president urged local health officials to be vigilant about identifying and reporting suspected cases.

Places such as schools should consider closing temporarily if any illness surfaces there, he said, and parents should consider in advance how children at home will be cared for. Sending a child to a day-care facility may not be the best solution, he said.

Obama said he requested $1.5 billion in emergency funding from Congress on Tuesday if the outbreak becomes more widespread.

As of Wednesday morning, the World Health Organization said at least 112 cases had been confirmed worldwide. iReport.com: "Regular life" in Mexico with masks

Earlier Wednesday, the acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the child's death.

"A child has died from the H1N1 virus," the CDC's Dr. Richard Besser said. "As a parent and a pediatrician, my heart goes out to the family."

He added, "We have expected that over time we would see deaths from this infection, and that's what we're finding."

Six of the 64 confirmed swine flu cases in the United States have been reported in Texas, according to the CDC. The agency is "taking aggressive action to try and limit the impact of this on our communities" but isn't changing its recommendations as a result of the confirmed swine flu death, Besser said.

"I expect we'll see more cases," he said. "And as we do, we'll learn more about this, and if there needs to be more stringent or less stringent recommendations, we'll be making those." VideoWatch Besser assess the situation »

Of the confirmed cases worldwide, there have been seven other confirmed swine flu deaths, all in Mexico.

"Given what we've seen in Mexico, we have expected that we would see more severe infections and would see deaths," Besser said.

However, he stressed that people should maintain their perspective on the swine flu outbreak.

"Seasonal flu each year causes tens of thousands of deaths in this country -- on average, about 36,000 deaths," Besser said. "And so this flu virus in the United States, as we're looking at it, is not acting very differently from what we saw during the flu season."
I don't know if it warrants its own thread, I believe so. Either way, seems that the proverbial shit's about to hit the fan. It seems that there not much to do now but wait.

But they died in the US. Hence the title... kind of misleading I agree... but that's the way the papers made it out to look.

Hmm...mea culpa. Or not. By law, he's a US fatality as he's on US soil. For instance, all the people attacked at an embassy abroad, while citizens of their home nation, are dead "in an attack on an embassy in [insert country]". Thus, it is location which takes precedence.

That being said, it doesn't diminish the fact that the US is soon going to be prone to suffering several cases of Mexicans either purposely coming or living across the border, in order to get access to the better health care. Now that it's actually proved to be able to kill in the US, and has an incubation period of two to five days (Dr. Richard Wenzel Professor and Chairman, Dept. of Internal Medicine, Medical College of Virginia--source), it's evident that there is nothing that can truly be done to prevent it; it moves too fast, and is impossible to detect at an ordinary border check.

He crossed to get treatment. The WHO also just changed the death toll form 152 to 7 (all from Mexico) .

Location is important, I agree. My point is that the child was not infected in the US. The child was not a US citizen. The only reason it is a death on US soil is that medical treatment was taking place of the child in the US.

So this swine flu thing, wasn't it a combination of swine/bird flu? Or are they different things?

That settles the matter.

They roll around every year in one form or another. No big deal at all. The planet is overpopulated anyways, these things need to happen.

The total population is a little off. I included illegals since they seem to count as US deaths too (TSI) ..lol.

If it starts mutating or jumping then I'd show concern. But right now it's very treatable.. more so than the normal flu.

Went to the doctors today to get more sickleave and he brought up this so called pandemia. In Finland more than 1600 ppl die each year because of your normal average flu. And that don't make the headlines in any particular way. Now that there is a tad more effective flu which has killed soon millions, no wait, how many? A few for certain and 150 or so if the tests are even right. And this is causing the whole globe to panic. Way to go media.

Back to death cases. Those who have died have had something else already weakening them like immunity-problems with the body, pneumonia or other weakening diseases. And the symptoms described in the news, why you should seek immediate medical help are, headache, fever, coughing, sore throat, runny nose, joints and muscles aching. Now I don't know about you, but to me these symptoms reaally sound an awful lot like a normal flu? I mean I've had those all at some point for the last 4 days and I don't go screaming around that I'm dying. Silly panicing people. Well atleast the medicine companies are going apeshit for all the money flowing in from rubber gloves, face covers, disinfection lotions, pills and whatnot. Come to think of it, hope my bank is investing its money, aka my savings, in Orion Pharma or similar.
