262 Confirmed cases, another 2500+ *possible* cases.

152 reported dead, but only *26* are confirmed to have died from the influenza subtype H1N1 virus (the swine flu strain)

Reports of infections (again, most arent confirmed) in 25 countries. Mexico is the ONLY country with ANY deaths, confirmed or otherwise.

The SARS pandemic of 2002-2003 (around 8 months) killed around 800 worldwide from around 8000 reported cases.

Meanwhile Malaria, TB, and Hepatitis continue to kill 1-3 million people each, every year.

We can all thank the sensationalist media of the US for whipping up the ignorant masses for us. Few people die in Mexico (thats never happened?) and a few in the US have some diarrhea and the sniffles. Gimme a break, I cant even watch the news anymore without every channel having some outrageously overblown story.

Oh and the Spanish Flu killed somewhere between 20-100 million people and spread all over the world, even to the arctic and remote pacific islands. Thats double the number dead from WWI. Its estimated that it infected 1 BILLION people, HALF of the Earth's population at the time. Experts believe it may have killed more people than the Bubonic Plague (Black Death). Now THAT is a pandemic.

The Spanish Flu took a year or so to kill all those millions.  We're just on month one or so.

Latest says that there were two deaths in Los Angeles that may have been caused by the Swine Flu

And this is hasn't made the news, but family friends in Canada lost a son when he fell ill got pnuemonia and died. He died in Vancouver. Some of my family attended his funeral was last week. He was only 30 years old. Its possible that it was swine flu. He died before the swine flu was front page news.

Personally I think this flu bug as been around for a little while.
And of course there will be cases reported that had nothing to do with the Swine Flu. I wrote earlier that they were saying that there was a case in Orlando. The hospital is denying it now. People are just itching to jump the gun and say swine flu.

The regular flu kills mostly the weak, elderly and the very young.  The swine flu is mostly killing otherwise strong and healthy folks.

strong and healthy by who's standards?  no fatalities here, and simply living in Mexico is enough to seriously compromise your immune system.

The media loves to liken these various illnesses to actual pandemics, but there is typically very little scientific basis behind it all

Apparently it's North American Influenza now.

Modern Medicine wins again.
We've been lucky that this paticular H1N1 strain doesn't have resistance to our main antivirals.

But I still think we REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY need to pour money in to developing new antivirals and new anti-biotics. Because if we get an H1N1 strain which (like this one and the 1918 one) produces a cytokine storm, is as virulent as normal AND is resistant, then we're in deep.
Antibiotics won't do anything for the swine flu (or any other virus)...only the secondary conditions.

We have relatively few truly effective antiviral drugs, period. It's not limited to this strain (or any strain of flu).

Apparantly Spain have got their first person who has got swine flu who hasn't been to Mexico.

So I gather that's where it's spreading?

Google maps now has a 2009 Swine Flu (H1N1) Outbreak Map. I didn't try to embed it because its a pita slow upload. I think a lot of sites are embedding it and its making it really slow.

Egypt is now killing all of the pigs in their country to "prevent" swine flu.

/facepalm.

It's always good to reaffirm that people who don't know their ass from a hole in the ground in terms of scientifically-derived preventative measures are in charge of such things in most countries around the world.

EDIT ^^^^^^^^^^LEVEL 5^^^^^^^^^^

Apparently patient zero is A Five Year Old Kid from Mexico whose mother says that she thinks he contracted it from a nearby pig farm.

I have a new theory on the swine/avian/human mixed up flu bug.

Some Mexican drug lord must have heard that feeding pigs the bodies of your victims is a good way to make the evidence disappear. So the pigs eat some human with the flu, the pigs are fed other dead amimals like chickens and other garbage. The pigs have swine flu, and swine flu mixes with human flu and avian flu and whalla mutant swine flu. The kid plays near the farm gets contaminated with teh mutant strain and pandemic
